So, I want to disinfect a 20 gallon tank, hides, and a water bowl. I want to use bleach and water, but what ratio? 50/50? Or more water? Could I just spray it on and let it set, or do I have to dunk all of it? Will it also work on wood hides? Thanks.

I usually soak everything in bleach water for an hour first, then scrub with detergent.

Does vinegar and water clean just as sufficiently for disinfecting? And Im wondering if bleach is harmful to Leo's.

Thanks, Luke

Ok thanks. Since it's pretty much just those floors in the tubs that my leo's are housed in, I probably only need about an inch of solution in there correct? And then maybe swish it around to get the walls lightly.

Does this sound about right?

Eric

Eric,

We let whatever we're disinfecting sit in the 10% solution for 10-15 minutes then rinse thoroughly.

That should be fine...no need to fill the entire tub....

Just make sure you make a separate tub of solution for all the cage furnature to soak while you're cleaning out the tubs.

Personaly i wouldnt use any chemical cleaners to clean the tank or its furniture.

Chemical cleaner even when diluted are harsh and have quite a powerfull oder, even after you have rinsed it off there will always be a fine resudue on the surface.

A friend of mine dose cleaning for a living, i was talking to her on one ocasion about how i clean my tanks (i used to use the comercial cage cleaners) she set me streight and recommended a natural dissenfectant, pure lemon juice in warm or hot water, Being that lemon juice is a natural disinfectant and deodorizer.

Lets not forget that your geckos live in this tank, eat inside it, drink from eithr a dish or like mine from the glass and ocasionaly from the rocks and furniture. Do you really want to clean these thing with a poison?

just my 2c-

Ok, here is what i do mate -

1. half a cup of lemon juice.
2. 1 tablespoon of salt.
3. hot water.

Get a spray bottle, you can buy them from most supermarkets in the gardening section.

Put the lemon juice and salt in to the spray bottle and fill it with hot water, give it a good shake and your good to go.

Simply spray a decent amount in and around the tank and or furniture, allow to sit for a minute or so, spray it again then wipe/scrub the tank and or furniture, rince then dry and your done. Its cheap, simple, disinfects and deodorizes and most importantly, is safe.

I actualy use the exact same solution on my kitchen work tops, good stuff. Give it a try.
