We have written extensively about this before. Nolvasan is a fine product and works well, but its strong odor is undesirable for use with geckos who are very sensitive to strong chemical odors. Carpet deodorizer killed a gecko colony a few years back here! Be careful with strong chemical odors around leos.
We much prefer Quatricide PV15. Much more effective than Nolvasan, kills spores/mold/fungus, as well as all bacteria and viruses....no odor, and very safe if used as directed.
We dilute 1 tablespoon per gallon of water, and dispense that stock solution in spray bottles to do spot cleaning, etc.
I personally don't like using any chemicals that strong on any of my animals. We do a bi annual cleaning with diluted chlorhex, but house geckos in different tubs for 3 days post cleaning and perform a thorough rinse after the 3 days period. You don't want to destroy the natural flora of your animals. Routinely clean cages and you shouldn't have any issues.
I use a veryyyy diluted bleach solution and then plain water, and let it air out for a day or two until I can't smell the bleach anymore, then do another rinse for good measure. I always have temporary tanks on hand.
Chlorhexidine is a excellent cleaner but kind of expensive and usually has to be ordered, Most of the time i use 1 part bleach 10 parts water mixed in a spray bottle, just have to make sure to rinse the tubs out well and air them out.
Has anyone tried Healthy Habitat or any of those 'natural' cleaners?
I use vinegar to clean my tanks and furniture. Once every 3 months or so I put the wooden furniture in the oven for 15 minutes on 350 F. The vinegar is natural and kills the bacteria and evaporates within an hour. I've been using that for the last 4 1 /2 years. Once in awhile I will use bleach but I won't put the tiles in the bleach water. I make sure everything is dry and aired out before I put them back in it. I have a holding tank for when I'm cleaning their tanks.
