Do Red Heat Bulbs Affect The Color Of A Leo??

So when I first got my SHTCT she was a bright yellow and very beautiful. After a few months on the red heat bulb her colors got very dull. I was wondering if anyone knew if the heat bulbs somehow affect the skin cells on the geckos and affect their pigment in color? After switching her homes into a bin Ive noticed that her colors have started coming back but not as vibrant as before. Either way she is a healthy girl and I luve her so much :] I also noticed that Marcia also posted pics of a tangerine whose colors were affected by the color of the substrate. I find that very interasante.

it's not the bulb. Maybe you didn't have enough heat in the first home. Cold can cause dullness.

My house is on a narrow island, and the wind cuts right through the house. Meaning that the house is hard to keep at a constant temperature. I have my Leo's in a office where I put in a space heater last month. I monitored it closely and noticed something similar to this. But I must have made the room to hot. All 3 of my geckos stopped eating, had running stool, and colors seemed to dim. I lowered the temps immediately, and WA-LA! All three of them have been chowing on food, look good, and have hard stools.

Has anyone else had a run in with high temps and similiar symptoms?

Get a thermostat with a probe and place the probe on the ground of the hot side, I,m betting its a little cold. What do you have on the bottom of your tank?

Well when she was in her tank I had a thermometer at the bottom. I originally put it at the top in stupidity and the tank was around 115 degrees but when I placed it at the bottom it was always inbetween 87 and 91 degrees so i dont think it was too cold lol. Maybe it was too hot like for LeoIsland?? The thermometer was a cheap one :/

Have you tried putting a uvb in your tank, some people don't agree with this but I don't think uv light hurts them and there cheap to run.

Never use a cardboard box or alike material under a heat bulb; it's a fire hazzard.
She is a beauty and I don't see her running from underneath the UVB:)

Well I had the cardboard box under the heat bulb like that for about a year without any problems.. I would say the same thing about putting a plastic bin over 90 degree heat tape but apparently that works out fine for tha most part. But I see what ur saying. N yeah all she cared about back then was food lol. Now all she cares about iz sleep haha.

Tell that to the boy I saw on You Tube with the big burned hole on top of a cardboard box. Worst part is he continued using the box and just layed it sideways:main_huh: His was much closer to the light though.

See if I woulda found a burning hole I wouldve tossed it n the heat bulb. Maybe he had a higher wattage?? Either way a low wattage bulb could make hole if it was close enough. N Yeah I was real sensitive about putting things by the bulb. Leos safety always comes first :]

She appears comfortable under the strip light:) Why did you change it for a infra red bulb?
