Do they normally go nuts for calcium powder?

One of my male (Hardee) takes a lot of calcium. I have seen him literally taking bites at his calcium dish!

mine just took a big old mouthful actually

so i don't have to worry about over-supplementing them, because they know when they've had enough?

Sam that's funny that you started this thread. I was feeding my geckos the other day when I noticed one of my females licking calcium out of her dish. I had never seen any of them do that before the other day.

From what I understand nats, too much calcium isn't a bad thing, it just appears in the form of those puffy spots under their arms. Its too much vitamins that can be mad. I've read too much Vitamin A (or too little for that matter) can result in eye deformities.

I think Calcium Plus is designed to be solely a dust, and not to be put in a bowl, as it combined the vitamins and calcium.

Thanks Heather, this whole suppliment thing has me confused.
Yeah, I know about the vitamin A thing, but I have been given the impression that leos can not regulate their calcium intake, and that it needs to be added to the diet in a controlled way. Not arbitrarily just giving them all the calcium dust they can eat.
All I use is the calcium plus stuff for dusting their food.
I use nothing else, and do not give them a dish of calcium.

It's just that, with all the differing views, I hope I am doing the right thing for my little friends. :)

You're not the only one nats! I am just going with the flow...I've got Calcium Plus to dust with every night, and that is going well! lol

From what I've read, they ARE able to regulate their levels...they eat what they need. I haven't bred this year, but I am contemplating on adding a dish of solid calcium to the female's tanks, just in case when they are producing eggs next year.

I am with you on the nothing else though...I have some Reptivite that I need to get rid of before it out dates, so the little ones are getting one dusting a week, but other than that it's straight Repashy.

Well, I do have to say one thing that I saw right away when I switched to calcium plus.
My leos would not eat mealies unless they where starving (the leos, not the mealies! :main_laugh:).
When I dusted w/ calcium plus, now all my leos are eating mealies :)

It's funny, even when one of my males isnt hungry, he will push the mealy all over the floor licking the dust off it. Then, after he gets all the "good stuff" off, he ignores it :D
