Do you want them to sleep?

Right now in my leo tank I have a bright light showing to imitate night/day. He sleeps all day when the light is on, the moment I turn it off he comes out of his hide to play.

My question is, is the sleeping beneficial? Because If I didn't keep the light on 12 hours a day, he probaly wouldn't sleep as much, so please tell me =)

I think they like it. They are never in a deep sleep, but they are nocturnal, and usually hiding during the day in the wild. So I don't see anything wrong with it.

Thanks, but alot of people say to use those red bulbs that give off heat but no light.

My friend uses one of those for his gecko and his gecko is out moving around alot.

They don't need heat lamps.. they need a UTH for heat..

Your friends gecko just might be different. All geckos are not made the same.

my UTH doesn't get hot enough by itself, so my red bulb provides the heat necesarry as well. I ordered a ceramic heat thingy, because hopefully the red light won't have to be on all night in my room

If there is a UTH in the tank, does there need to be a bulb?

All you need is a UTH that covers about 2/3 of the floor space, and a thermostate w/ prob.

No other heat source is needed.

You need to provide a temp gradient that is about 90 to 93F on the warm side (where your UTH is) and room temp on the other end (no heat lamps or anything there).

P.S. you can provide a low watt red light for viewing your leo at night, just get something that does not produce heat.

One other thing;
Your UTH needs to be mounted flush on the bottom of your terrarium (no air gaps).
Some UTH do not have adhesive backing.
You can stick those to your tank with silicone adhesive (aquarium cement).

The therm prob needs to be on top of your substrate, and in the warmest spot over the UTH.

Leopard Geckos can do just fine without any light source as long as their temps are right. They shy away from light for the most part. I'd bet that half of the time that you think he's sleeping he's just trying to avoid the light. As far as the need for sleep goes, of course they need to sleep. Chasing down bugs burns a lot of energy, lol. I don't use any light at all. Since they are nocturnal they naturally prefer low lighting.

Maybe my question was hard to understand...I probaly worded it wrong.

I know...that sleeping is probaly beneficial. The only thing is, my gecko sleeps alot, because its bright in the room. My friends gecko, doesn't because it's dark in his room. So, his gecko thinks its night time 24/7. Which influences it to move around alot more, because they're nocturnal. Which, in turn leads to less sleep.

My gecko, sleeps during the day because its bright, and when it gets dark gets out and walks around. So my gecko is actually "influenced"(not sure what the right word is) to sleep. Because it's so bright, while his thinks its night, so it moves around alot, instead of sleeping.
Get it?

I put a flourescent light over my geckos tank and its on a timer to regulate a day/night cycle. It goes on at 6am and turns off at 6pm so my gecko is "active" as soon as it goes off at 6pm. Remember it is normal for leopard geckos to sleep nearly 24/7. A 20 second tank-patrol a few times a night is the most my gecko does.
