One of my geckos will make a soft quacking sound when picked up too suddenly, while the other two have never made an audible sound. I am curious if others have noticed this variation in behavior.

I don't think the geckos talk the way we do, but if you mean if they communicate to eachother, than the answer is YES! The have many ways to 'talk': the sqeaking, they can hiss, they wave their tail, breath heavily and many more non verbal behaviours! Just sit down and watch your gecko for an hour, you'll see what they can do to communicate!

Greets,

Stevie

I have a male (Pipp) that sqeaks every time he comes out of his hide. I thought he'd grow out of it, but I think he just likes to announce his presence.

The ability to vocalize is one of the things that make geckos a unique group of lizards. As Stevie points out vocalizations and other behaviors are used to communicate territorial, defensive and mating behaviors. :D They can all do it, if you don't give them a reason to do it they will likely not exhibit it. As many of you have found out, their temperaments vary and some are quick to "speak up!"

The "alien scream." Expect a lot of that their first three months of life! After breeding these guys for many years I have never gotten used to it, there is something about that schrill pitch! :freak:

I don't know why, but now I just find it humorous when they do that. Some are screamers, and some aren't, and so it's just kinda funny when one of them is :)

Mine make soft little clicking sounds if I pick them up after being away for a while. One of mine will make this weird sound that sounds like the suction thing at the dentist office if he gets mad. That's pretty amusing. I sometimes think he thinks he's a little dinosaur when he makes that noise.

I have one that'll make a low growl when he is not happy, i.e. when I pick him up and move left, but he wants to go right...and I also have one that'll make a loud squeak when he wakes up and stretch in the evening. I also have some that'll chirp when they try to climb glass.

There's "chirp" button on my website, that is one of my Crytodactylus peguensis- they chirp as loud as birds, and that audio file is much compressed! I had one friend a few years ago with a low-performing computer that when she clicked on the chirp, her computer would crash! LOL!

My female makes this kind of crackling-ish noise almost. I dont know how to explain it but she does it when I pick her up. Once she is on my chest or lap, she is fine.
