...open spaces or places filled with hides and rocks and other stuff?

I think it depends on the gecko. Generally I"d expect they'd like lots of hiding space, but I have some that seem to always hang out in the open. Put a few things out and see what your gecko (if you have one) likes to do.

I think it is easier to catch crickets if you have a little space.
