Oh man.. I am officially screwed for my drivers test. It's today at 3:30, and I'm so afraid that I'm going to fail! I'm turning 18 this week and I'm going to feel like such a loser if I don't have my license to prove it. If I fail, I have to schedule another test 6 weeks in advance..

Don't get me wrong! I'm totally confident in my driving ability, I have a wonderful 95 Honda Civic that is so easy to parallel park it's not even funny... The problem is, it's in the shop!

The Friday before my test my car decides to take a turn for the worse. I'm driving it down the road (I park it at the bus stop.. *Sigh*) and everything that could go wrong, did! My car began to idle strangely, revving and heaving, and finally I'm greeted by a plume of smoke. I pop the hood and my radiator reservoir looks like it exploded all over the inside of the car. Coolant everywhere! Needless to say, it's been in the shop ever since.

So either I have no car to drive, or I get to drive a car totally new to me. My grandmother offered to bring down her Prius.

Oh yeah, and here's the kicker.. First freakin' snow of the year happened yesterday. 3-4 inches.. Ice and snow EVERYWHERE. :bomb:

Good luck Lena!!!

Biggest tip I can give you is go slow (because of the snow and ice) and before you leave the parking spot, make sure you physically turn around and look EITHER way lol, not just check the mirrors...that was how I got my only two dings against me when I took my test years ago.

Again, good luck! I'm really excited for you :)

I failed. :( I just wasn't used to my grandmother's car and I overcompensated for it's width during the parallel parking. She didn't even give me a second chance! (Kid infront of me got 2!)

Ugh.. What a bummer. 6 more weeks. :(

At least you'll be totally prepared for the next one! I failed my permit test when I was 15 and felt like it was the end of the world. Maybe you can practice driving family members' gas over the next few weeks to be comfortable driving anything.

Ouch...I'm sorry Lena! That really sucks! Don't let it get you down though...I'm sure you'll do wonderfully your next test :)

They changed the testing the year after I took mine, and left out the parallel parking part. I was luck that the vehicle I tested in was my dad's F-350 Crew Cab lol...there was no parallel spots big enough for it, so she let me skip that part on the road, and just made me do it back in the parking lot. I COULD, but was happy I didn't have to in such a pressured situation. Now kids don't even have to parallel park! I think it's stupid, as half of Albany is side-of-street parallel parking.

Where I live, parallel parking is hardly necessary. All country roads.. :p But I agree, it should be taught and tested on.

What's really scary is that here in Houston, a city of over 5 million people, I never had to take a driving test to get my license! We had a program for a while where your parents could teach you and sign saying that they had given you the driving test. I'm not sure if that's how they still do it but it was a terrible idea!

I'm sure in 6 weeks we'll be reading your rave thread about getting your license. :)

In virginia you dont have to parralel park to pass the driving test, they dont even teach it to you. Learning to drive is a class in school that you are required to take and the teacher passes or fails you. You still have to take a test at the DMV to get your learners permit before you can take the driving part of the class. You also get your liscense at 16 and 3 months.

Oh wow...it's amazing how different it is everywhere! I didn't have to take a class, instead we had to log I believe 40 hours of driving time with our parents, and they had to sign a sheet stating that we had completed it.

I cannot believe that is all that you had to do Mel!!! I wonder how many kids forged their parents signatures!!?

we had to do that to I forgot to add that. Our parents had to sign saying we drove 40 hours, 10 of which had to be night hours. plus the class which was half driving, half book work

Those people aren't always great judges... I did HORRIBLY on my test when I was 16 (in Arizona), and she was all, 'I'm gonna fail you.' So I said, 'You know what, lady? DO IT.' because she was really horrible, and she got mad and passed me! So yeah, don't feel too bad.

That's a bummer... Better luck next time!

On the topic of parallel parking, for my original driver's license I didn't have to, but did after I was paralyzed and had to get certified to drive a hand control adapted vehicle... I drive[drove] a BIG van and that was definitely a terrifying experience...

Next time don't psyche yourself out and go in there with confidence... :main_thumbsup:
