Will a gecko drop it's tail for no reason? I had a baby drop it's tail yesterday. It is alone, nobody was is in the room all day, and it was quite. I'm so confused as to why a perfectly healthy gecko drops it's tail. Any ideas?

im not an expert, but do you have the cage in reach length by a cat/dog mabye it got scared....if not it could of gotten startled by something else since it is just a baby...thats just my thoughts through all the forums ive seen I never came across a gecko dropping for no reason...sorry to hear that though :(...someone with more knowledge will shed light for sure

Sometimes, they think their tail is a worm and bite it off. This often happens to Enigmas who display a strong syndrome. It can also happen to non-Enigmas. Or, they have shedding trouble, and bite part of the tail off. It's not your fault, and there's no way to prevent it!

I have never had this happened to any of mine but I did have this info saved I found on a website.

Common reasons that a gecko will drop its tail in captivity can include:

•Bullying from cage mates
•Sick gecko with an already lowered immune system
•Grabbed by the tail
•Stress and fear
•Skin issues and retained skin on the tail
•Bacterial, fungal, or protozoan infections
•Abscess or swelling in the area

Do you have cats or dogs capable of watching the gecko? That might be the prob. My 9 month old giant puppy looks up in my leo's 70 gal and more than once scared the crap out of him.:) If not pets than I have no idea.:(
