Just wondering what brand everyone use? Are there any ingredients that I should avoid? The pack I bought last time is at least 2 years old and I think it has expired; I can't remember what brand it was.

Any recommendations? Can I feed them cooked real meat (left over bits from cooking)?

Bonnie, there's really no recommendation per say. Just get one that has good nutritional value. Don't get one of those really cheap dry dog foods, because they're usually just junk.

How about fish food? Do you think they are good to use too?
I'm just worried about the ingredients used in some of the dry cat/dog food; for example, I heard garlic oil and rosemary is bad for the roaches, which will then be bad for my geckos?

If I get fish food, which type should I get? Tropical fish? Gold fish?

Look for a pet food that is naturally preserved with vitamin E. Most of them are, but double check. The ingredients should say chicken fat/mixed tocopherals and thats a natural preservative, or say naturally preserved with vitamin E. some dog and cat foods such as Hills Science Diet are still using chemical preservatives that should be banned.

Bonnie,
I find the dog and cat food with the highest protein %...
What I do is put half dog and half cat food in a blender with fish flakes and I add oats and other grains and freeze dried friuts and veggies when I can find them... I blend it all up into a fine grain powder...
No need to add any vitamins... And DO NOT ADD CALCIUM....

Keep in mind that most dry pet foods are made with meat by-products that are NOT pasteurized. This means that they can carry and cause bacterial infections that dogs & cats do not contract because their GI systems are designed to handle it. Dogs & cats can eat rotting meat and not suffer from disease as a result. Feeders like crickets can build up and carry astronomical amounts of bacteria without problems, but these microbes can be passed easliy to reptiles... and since they are not warm-blooded, these infections can be problematic.

as for the fish food tropical or gold fish. it really does not matter. the ingredients are mostly the same some just have slighly higher percentages of some things than others. most all fish food is high in protein so you should be safe getting whatever is the cheapest.
