Dubia Nymphs

I am planning to get started breeding Dubia and had a few questions on nymphs.

1. What size nymphs (Extra Small, Small, Medium, Large) do you feed?

2. How many nymphs do you feed of which size?

3. Can you use veggies as a only water source, or do you need water crystals also?

4. What should the temps be?

5. Do I have to separate the different sizes of nymphs?

I may have asked one of these questions before but I got varied answers so I just want to clear it up.

Thanks,
Joey

It all depends on the size of the gecko to determine the size of the nymph to feed. Most of my geckos are in the 44g to 65g range and will eat 5 to 6 medium nymphs(around a 3/8 to 3/4 inch. I can get all of them to take down a full grown male that just molted if I catch them while still pure white, then you will only need to feed one!

You can use only veggies but you it would be better to use fresh fruit that has a lot more juice in them, I use oranges, apples, plumbs, and anything else that I have around the house. I will also throw any scraps from all fruits and veggies when cooking.

I keep the warm side of my bins at 95 to 100 degrees.

You do not "need" to separate the sizes but it does make it easier to sort out the size you need to feed off. I personally do not separate all of my sizes, I keep two bins. One is the colony and the other being the grow out bin. I separate out the largest nymphs out into the the grow out bin so I can keep track of the female to male ratio in the breeding colony. I keep all of the small nymphs in with the adults, they consume the adult frass to grow faster. When my colony gets any bigger I will start to separate out sizes and start an other breeding colony. For now my colony is supporting 2 bearded dragons, 1 water dragon, 8 leopard geckos and 7 firebelly toads.

Good luck with setting up your colony.

Thanks! How often do you feed Dubia? And what size tub do use for your colony?

I can't remember the size but it is the big blue sterallite tub with the latching lid probably around 30 or 40 gallons.

If you are talking how often you feed the roaches I keep food in with them at all times. If you are asking how often to feed them to your geckos then I feed some every day and other every second day. Depends on the gecko.

1. just use the old........ ''no wider then the space between the leo's eyes''!

2. that depends on the leo.

3.i feed only fruit sliced up for there water source, mine love plums best:main_thumbsup:

4. 90-100

5. not unless you want to, i try to feed off more of the male nymphs.

i keep food in at all times! fruit, veggies, dog food, chicken crumbles.

i use a 10gal. tank with a UTH and lots of egg crates

One last question. :D

For heating these guys can you just put a UTH or heat tape underneath? What do you guys do?

Thanks

I use a heating pad for people without the auto shutoff. You could use an UTH or heat tape with a thermostat, otherwise they will get too hot.

I have a question about dubia, but didn't really want to start a new thread about it.

My question is- I know males are easily identifiable as adults, but at what point should I be able to tell the difference? As best I can tell, they all look the same to me so far.

You cant tell males apart from females until their final molt into adults

This is untrue. If you look at the attached picture you can see how to tell sexes apart while they are nymphs. This is very useful, because if you are only feeding nymphs you can feed off mostly or all males so you can be assured you will have plenty of females to grow to adult hood. The difference is in the last segment on their bottom side. Females are about twice as large as a males.

How large are those nymphs? And is this sexing method work 100% of the time?

You can tell as soon as the nymphs are large enough for you to see the difference(depends on how good your eyes are!) and yes it is 100% affective!

The last segment. The males' are smaller, and the females have wide and larger last segment.

Everytime I clean my roach bin and seperate out the nymphs, I use this method to identify the females. So I can throw back some female nymphs into the breeding tub to keep the female ratio higher.
