I use a big tub that I got from Walmart for 3.40. Put some egg crates in it.
I put oats and fruit in with them but there's a lot different options.

Dont know how many roaches i have, just keep them in a 20 gallon long. they seem to do fine. Cut up fruit drop it in. Heat ceramic lamp no light. Feed all babies that hatch with them and adults get crickets.... Do i need a bigger container?

roach basics:
human heating pad on med will get it up to temp (85-95)
high protien foods....Ground kitten chow is prolly best and cheapest
water crystals ( they can't swim)
set the egg crate vertically to help keep clean and provide more surfaces for hiding/climbing
add half an orange a week.....It's their viagra!:main_thumbsup:

when you have babies, don't clean out too much of the frass, the babies eat it.

each adult female should pop around 20-30 babies monthly
4 months to adult hood

be warned, a colony can grow exponantially:main_yes:

Your critters will determine what size you need to get the colony up to, my one beardy can demolish around 1000 adults in a month.

Do not use human heating pads it is dangerous and irresponsible. They were not designed to be used continually in a confined space. People who use them are sacrificing safety and reliablity for a perceived savings of money. Use a heating product designed to be used in such a manner and never use any heating device without a thermostat. Make sure you use unmedicated mash. Chick mash for game birds might serve you better as it is higher in protein. At those prices you cant afford not to get them.

Please state your source on human heating pad being unsafe and unreliable, They have a built in adjustable thermostat, have been used for many years, and cost the same if not more than reptile heating products (heating cables/UTH).

The manufacturers themselves

The manufacturers themselves if you ask them will tell you that any warranties are void if used for a manner other than intended. They were not designed nor are built to be used in such a manner. When it comes to electronic equipment it is unwise and unsafe to use it in manners beyond the scope of their intent. More damage has been caused by them than the use of properly designed equipment built for such purpose. They are not designed to be used in an enclosed space meaning between a cage and a shelf for example. They are not designed to be used continually either. You will not find any human heating pads that will state they are safe or designed to be used in such a manner.

I have driven for years now without getting into an accident so perhaps I shouldnt wear safety belts either? Sooner or later something will happen. Like driving without insurance you can go for years without something happenning, but the first time it does will more than negate all the money you saved not having it all those years. Consult with a qualified electrician or manufacturers representative if you wish. But there is no legitimate reason to use them in such a manner. Also the thermostats are not very accurate in them and if it gets to warnm or too cool you can adjust them because you are wearing them so you have immediate feedback. The same is not possible in the heating of an aninimate object. Also the thermostate they come with adjusts temperatures based on the pad not the temperature of the inside of the bin. Thermostats must be able to read the temperatures inside the enclosure to make adjustments.

That doesnt mean there cant be inferior products supposedly designed for reptile heating and such. However one should never use products in a manner for which they were never designed, intended or built for uses other than intended.
