once you get your colony going you will have 100's of small nymphs and you will under stand why you get such great prices lol... its good to have dubia mixed in every stage and age as the adults die off new adults are maturing and also are having new babies so once that is down pact you will notice it will take off right after that.

i just sold 500 mixed to a friend to re sell at a show and i did notice that since i did that my colony is producing more to replace what i took out faster. i have 2 colonies going right now 1 is a feeder colony which was created off my main colony. i just took 1 egg flat and moved it into a new enclosure and just fed it and kept it hot and fed out of it and now its over flowing. the temp is key i dont care what anyone says... the hotter it is the more they eat grow faster and produce more. i wish i could keep it at a steady 90F but its hard when you have central air and it cools everything lol.

how long does it take to get the colony going at that level? i have about 20-30 adults..
maybe 150 or so mixed sizes left after i did some feeding out of them..

i started with 5 males 20 females it was a extremely slow process so shot for another 5 males and 20 females and the bin still looked almost empty. so i went and sprung for 160 mixed which included another 10 males and 25 females.

a 1 male to every 5 to 7 ratio works fine. i hear 1 male can service up to 10 females monthly. i got the mixed to kind of have them in all stages. it was slow at the begining because temps were low and i was still testing things out. once the temps hit the high 80's they took off. i wonna say with what i started with it took approx 2 months to get cranking.

I just ordered 100 1" to 1 1/2" roaches to start my colony. Would these be adults?
I have a 5 gallon rubbermaid container now to keep them in then a smaller one for my feeders to be in seperatly. Do you think 100 was enough to start a colony with? and how soon should I start feeding off of it? I know I will have extra males in the long run so how much do you think would be a good price to sell them for?
Sorry for all the questions I just want to be sure I get everything right! Thanks!

in my personal opinion the males arent worth anything at the moment. when i first got into the dubia i noticed the males were 25 to 50 cents each and the females were $1 to $1.25 each.. now i see people giving away males with the purchase of females or mixed orders. i see people giving away their extra males free just to keep the male population down in their colonies. I also just seen prob last month someone selling 500 males for $20 for feeding.

the Dubia prices have come down a lot since they are so easy to produce and everyone is breeding them.

Now to answer the question to start your colony really depends on a lot of things. how soon do you want to feed out of it? The sooner you want to feed out of it the more you would need to start with.

What temps are you going to keep them at? the warmer they are kept the more active they are the more they eat the faster they grow and produce so they will establish faster.

how many animals are you feeding the dubia to? the more mouths to feed the more dubia you want to start with.

I wanted to feed my 4 leopard geckos 2 cresteds and 1 pacman frog. i started with about 250 dubia. about 150 were adult male and female and the last 100 was mixed. my colony took a solid 2 months before i started to feed out of it. after the 4th month i took a egg flat with all dubia on it moved it to a new tank now that one is full also.

hope this helps
