Dubias are Dieing

I received 120 Dubias on friday of last week and since i have received them they have been dieing off slowly. I don't know what the problem is but i will try to explain my setup and hopefully somebody has some ideas. I have seen about 1 or 2 dead each day right now and i'm really worried.

They are enclosed in a 40gallon rubbermaid tote
For heat i have a 5watt UTH heater on the left side with a 100watt red heat lamp on top of the same side to keep the air temp correct. I am running a similair setup on my leopard gecko cage and they are very happy. I use a temp gun to read the bottom of the enclosure's temperature and a thermometer for the air temp anywhere else. The air temp is just about 85degrees which from what i understand is correct.

The right side has nothing but is cooler and provide the gradient needed. On the left i have 3 egg crates, fresh unused crates, stacked vertically. On the right there is 1 egg crate a empty paper towel roll and 3 random sheets of paper towel for them.

I keep the food in the middle in a shallow plastic tray. It is ground up eukanuba large breed dog food with ground up cereal (raisin bran crunch to be specific right now). Every 3 days i put in some carrots, an apple or whatever else is laying around. I make sure to take this out within a day or 2 to prevent mold. In a seperate tray is a shallow thing of water with pebbles in it to prevent drowning. I have not seen a single one drown.

O and the tote has 2 cutouts on top covered with screen for air circulation. One screen has the heat lamp on it while the other is wide open.

I only see dead males now and only have seen 3 dead females but that was the first weekend and i know the temperature was off those first 3 days. I did see 1 dead nymph yesterday but it looked like he got beat up by another roach or something , maybe something fell on him i don't know but he was on his way out anyways.

This morning there was a dead male and yesterday another dead male. I tend to notice them before they die and they are very sluggish. The one who died this morning last night the left half of his body seemed to be paralyzed. Please help.:main_huh: They are all young adults by the way.

er...I don't know what to suggest, really.
As it doesn't sound like you're doing much different than most roach keepers.
I am at a loss.
I was going to suggest that maybe it was old age until I read your last sentence.

Try some fruit for them? Fruit is not only something they'll devour, but it also does well for hydrating them.

Are u sure u r not mistaking the shed for dead roaches, when one dies the others eat them. our husbandry seems good, is there any mold as that kills them. I f they are sluggish that usually means it is too cold, i just use a uth and all is well, they need darkness. to feel comfortable. do u see any white roaches???

I know its not just the shed i pick up the sheds and the dead ones. The shed is a helluva lot lighter. I have seen a couple of white roaches here and there so they are shedding actively. No mold at all i remove any veggies/fruits after 24hours. It is a solid colored tote for darkness and the heat lamp is a red one so it doesn't disturb them.

I understand you have the heat source, but where are you keeping the container? Indoors? What is the room temperature?

Try feret food, as it is highest in protein. Also be sure to provide water using those gel-water-crystals (also cleaner than old fruit - won't rot, etc). Keep the food and water in very shallow dishes to ensure they can access it.

How big are the holes for ventilation? You may consider using a soldering iron to create additional holes around the perimeter of the top and lid for more air circulation. Then you can apply screening over all the holes.

The container is indoors in my room right next to the gecko tank. The room temp is usually low70s high 60s. That is why i added the heat lamp since i felt the air temp was too low.

I'm looking at the water crystals and will be sure to check them out but from what i have understood they get enough water from fruits and veggies. And the water dish i have in there is very low it was just a top to a tiny rubbermaid container. The food dish was also a top to a small rubbermaid container. Maybe they might be too hard to reach. But i have seen roaches in the food eating and the carrots i put in last night are missing pieces too. So they are eating....maybe it is the water.

The 2 ventilation holes on top are about 8x8 inches to 10x10 inches. There are also tiny holes around the top edges of the container that the tote came with. Those holes are a little smaller than a pencil.

I'll be going home soon from work maybe things are ok and it was just left over weak roaches from the colder weekend. I'll keep updating.

Since you can tell they're males (adults); any chance they are dying from old age?

Last night i was looking at the temps and it looked like the combo UTH and Heat Lamp was pumping too much heat there wasn't a decent cool spot for them. Some spots were around 108F. I pulled the UTH last night and kept the heat lamp, this morning there isn't any dead roaches......it is a start i hope that was it. They are looking very happy today keeping my fingers crossed. The weather has been really crazy here and that probably contributed to it.
