Earthworms

Earthworms are common feeders for many salamanders and for some other reptiles because they have all the vitamins we get from dusting mealworms already in them. Has anyone tried feeding them to leos. Breeding them is easier than mealworms and there is no danger of them escaping. Thanks

Leopard geckos will rarely eat earthworms, they don't have the right feel or smell to them as they aren't part of their regular diet, versus insects and their larva, which are. Another thing is that earthworms eat soil and I wouldn't be comfortable feeding a gecko an alien prey item full of soil. Cultured worms from a distributor might be ok, if the gecko will take them and you are just using them for variety(they are not suitable as a standard, they lack the chitin as roughage that geckos need and can't be properly gutloaded as well) but wild collected worms are very likely to contain pesticides. Secondly, mealworms kept correctly shouldn't be escaping. I've never had a mealworm or beetle escape in over 10 years of culturing them.

Ok thanks for clearing that up. I haven't has any escape but I'm paranoid about that sort of thing. If I were to feed them I would order them
But i think I'll stick to mealworms and waxworms.

Just curious Clemsonguy... where do you live? I live in Landrum, SC and have been looking for a place to buy waxworms. I bought some awhile back a reptile show...but I need more.

Clemsonguy... I'm originally from Charleston, SC, but moved to Tryon, NC a few years ago. Then, in late 2010, I moved just 5 miles from the NC border into Landrum. LOL!

Laney, yeah, I already have my advance tickets for the show. I'll definitely be picking up some more there. There's usually a ReptiCon somewhere near me every few months. Concord, NC/Columbia, SC/Charleston, SC/Atlanta, GA. All of them are like 2 hours away from me. Hah!

It's a small locally owned pet store called The Pet Gallery... it's at the intersection of Hwy. 14 and 176. I work there twice a week, part-time, and the rest of the time I work as a tattoo artist. I have my own shop in Spartanburg, SC.
