Eclipses

I've posted this on another forum with.....not too much light shed on the topic. Since theres a lot of knowledge floating around here I thought Id give it a shot.

I have seen temper's eclipses, Ive also seen how he has had a few that have half the eye "eclipsed". If I was reading correctly he has linked the gene to reduced pattern/patternless morphs. So my question is, can you have an Eclipse Blizzard? The reason I ask this is because my blizzard has half of its eyes solid black....??

Anyone here familiar with the trait? Thanks for any info.

Yup!

This is a blizzard het RW albino that has eyes like what you're referring to. Usually, when only 1/2 of the eye is solid black people call it a "snake eye" and reserve the term "Eclipse" for eyes that are 100% black... well, at least from what I've seen/heard anyway.

I've had some RW Blazings hatch with eyes that are 3/4 solid black. Not quite sure what to call them yet, so right now they're just my "goofy eyed" leos. lol

Onto further questioning, how does the trait work. Will offspring be het?

Not to hijack this thread, but does anyone know if there has been any research done on the eyesight of geckos with these? It is purely a lack of color, or is there some deeper biological changes as well? Purely for my own curiosity, not other reason :)

Well from my own experience feeding it, the eyesight isnt lacking compaired to my normal eyed geckos. But other than that I have no clue.....

I agree with Marcia. My Snake Eyed girl and the blizzards that have solid black and half black eyes seem to see fine.

Edit addon: Anyone ever notice when there is a perfect Snake Eye that it's always on the inside of the eye. Funny how they tend to look cross eyed, specially when you look at one straight on that has two Snake Eyes.

I haven't been around lately so I'll add my two cents. Here's a cross eyed pic of my snake eyed Blizzard...

So is this just a normal recessive trait?
That's a really good question, Marc. I really don't know if anyone has figured it out for certain. I had several snake-eyed(ish) babies hatch from non-snake-eyed parents... actually, I want to say that well over half of the babies have non-normal eyes. To me, it would appear as though it is somehow linked or associated with the blizzard gene, as I don't think any of my non-homozygous blizzards have hatched with snake eyes. I do believe that someone hatched a RW albino that had snake eyes not too long ago, and I have seen a handful of R/APTOR crosses with snake eyes. Whether or not the snake eyes showing up in the blizzards are compatible with the snake eyes showing up in the Tremper morphs, I have no idea.

I'll have to go through the babies this weekend (hopefully if time permits) and come up with a chart of which animals produced how many non-normal eyes.
