Egg laid in the middle of the cage

I had one of my females just lay an egg in the middle of the cage. I do have a moist hide in the cage with moss. She has a calcium dish and gets a pinky every few weeks, andeats mainly mealworms andcrickets. she is nice and fat as well.

Now, the egg was soft, and i am sure it isnt any good. I am just wondering why she would have done this. she did lay only one egg 2 weeks ago in the moist box, and that one is fertile and in the incubator, but i never saw a second egg. could this be it? Just want to make sure she is okay.

All the eggs my geckos laid outside the box were obviously infertile. I think they just know sometimes . . .

Sometimes-especially their first season-they will only lay one egg instead of the usual two per clutch

It's not odd for their first year to lay single eggs instead of two at a time. I too have also heard that they will sometimes lay infertile eggs away from the fertile eggs. I'd say nothing to worry about.

okay cool. sound like she just knew this one wasnt fertile. She has laid mutiples of 2 for the previous 2 batches, but this past one only had one egg in the moist hide. then she dropped this one in the cage.

another question. She hasnt been with a male since december of last year. Is it possible she just isnt fertile any more?

From my understanding females can retain sperm for up to a year. So it wouldn't be surprising is she doesn't have any more viable sperm left in her. My females last 3/4 eggs came out unfertile and that was after 6 or 7 fertile clutches. She laid I think a total of 9 clutches in her first year, actually according to the breeder I got her from she wasn't even a year old yet when she started laying eggs.

I've been reintroducing the male every two clutches as long as females are still ovulating. Since I've been doing this there's been a 100% hatch rate. Keep in mind I'm only on hatchlings nine and ten...
