Eggs! And questions...

Hello all!

My high gold leo laid two eggs this weekend...she is housed with a normal pattern female and a high gold male. I've not seen them mate, but that doesn't mean they haven't. :D I've got the eggs in a rubbermaid container in moist vermiculite, on the hot side of the enclosure. Couple of questions...

One of the eggs looks like its failing, the other looks great. I've done what I can for the egg that looks like its failing, but I'm not sure how it will turn out. This normal?

Also, do leopard geckos lay eggs if they haven't mated? I think its too early to tell if these eggs are viable by candling, but I haven't found any reliable info on their reproductive biology.

Any advice or help would be greatly appreciated!

Sometimes, they do lay eggs without mating. This rarely happens (in my opinion). They will be infertle.

If one egg is failing and the other ones are doing great, then most of the time, there is nothing you can really do about the egg. It is normal to have eggs fail. If all of the eggs or most of them are failing, then you are doing something wrong. The failing egg may be infertle.

Awesome...thank you for the response! The one egg did fail, but the other one looks healthy. When should I expect to see anything when I candle the egg?

I've been able to see the bullseye within 24 hours on all of mine, but I think the average can be up to a week. Good luck!

You should see it right away, up to a week. Most of my eggs, I saw them right away, the smaller eggs, usually don't get it until later.

But don't throw eggs away until they collaspe, or turn rotton, or something. Last year, I felt bad--due to a big egg mistake, until one of the ones I left out the incubator, at 70 degree room temperature, that I forgot about (didn't watch or nothing) hatched. I came back, expected a bad egg, and there was a baby.

:( It looks like this other one is collapsing as well. Not sure what is going on. I put some verm on top of it, hope it helps. Thank you all for the posts and advice.

Like how wet is your verm? It just has to be damp, not wet. And what is the temperature? If you have more eggs and they are doing fine, then it just may be those eggs, especially if the other eggs are older.

It's damp enough to clump but breaks apart easy. And my temp is at 86. These were the only two eggs so far.
