***Slate or nice chosen rocks do a great job for ease.
Example of one of mine. Take care. HJ

Just another quick question; what i want is an elevated platform with raised edges to serve as a feeding platform that he can get in but the mealworms cant get out of. A simple solution I thought of is a kids shoebox (about 8" by 5.5"). I could set it upside down and carve holes in 2 or 3 of the sides to serve as an extra hide. Then i'd set the lid upside down on top of that with a ramp going up to it. I'll put the mealworms in the lid at feeding time. My question is has anyone used cardboard before and if so how well does it work?

the mealworms might be able to chew threw the cardboard and you couldnt wash it so you would have to throw it out and get a new one once a month

I think one reason is to provide weight to keep the bowls from moving easily.

The main reason I've seen rocks used in water bowls is in large deep sided bowls so that the animal has a stepping stone to help it climb out if it gets in.
