Product evaluation: ZooMed's Repti-Shedding Aid.
As anyone who has many leos, we have a few that are "problem shedders". Despite taking great care to provide a reliable moist hide, we still found that there were a few of our adult leos that would occasionally get shed remnants stuck to their head/nose area, and toes. Experienced leo folks know you need to check for this very carefully because it can result in very serious skin issues, scarring, and even loss of toes. Using a magnifying glass or jeweler's loupe, it is important to check the tips of the toes carefully after a shed, particularly on those problematic shedders, albino leos, etc. We decided to try Repti-Shedding Aid (pump spray bottle) as an adjunct, and found it to work very well in assisting the leos in removing their shed skin more easily.
There are a few ways we used the product. If a leo has problems with toe shed, we used moist Bed-A-Beast in their moist hides, and lightly sprayed the surface of the bedding with the product to give the surface a coating. This aided the toe shedding process very nicely. The other method is to remove the sprayer and dip a Q-tip into the solution and apply it wherever shed was stuck, on the toes, nose, etc. This worked much better than just plain warm water, and loosened the shed very well for easy removal with a tweezers or finger nail.
Repti-Shedding Aid contains: Water, Solubilizing Hydrotope, Glycerin, Jojoba Oil and Vitamin E Acetate in an oil base. In other words, it's a fairly oily suspension, so we do not recommend spraying it liberally all over your leo or you will have a greasy little lizard on your hands for some time! We feel it should be used sparingly and only on areas where needed, and of course, avoid spraying it around the nose and eyes.....use the Q-tip method for those areas.
We feel this is a great product and it can provide a safe and easy way to assist you and your leos with shedding issues.
