Exhibition/Show Question?

Not sure if this is the best place for this question, but it's always made me wonder...

If there are animal exhibition shows for other types of animals (even fish!), why aren't there any for reptiles? I've searched and searched and can't find anything on it, except the occasional 4-H Show.

Anyone have any insight on this?

Do you mean shows where no selling is going on, but people are just coming to look? If that's what you mean, my guess is that the many reptile shows around where reptiles are being sold fulfill the need of people to come and just look at reptiles (especially given the number of "window shoppers" I see at the shows where I vend).

No, I mean exhibitions where animals place and win ribbons against their color type or breed standard. As seen with dogs, cats, rabbits, rats, horses, fish, etc.. etc.. There could be selling in some situations, but most of it is a pat on the back to breeders to make sure they're doing the right things and are invested in their animals.

I've wondered that myself. First there has to be a governing body to set and control standards, as far as I can tell no one has been able or wanted to do that on the level it would take.. It's odd as one would think breeding reptiles would be as organized as breeding Guppies.

Well, I know of a lot of clubs (for other animals) that start out small, like state or county wise... some would go back to standards written by breeders or clubs in other states or a governing association, but honestly, if there are no-nothing about it... someone stepping up and at least trying would not be a bad idea. A show could be as small as a specific type of animal (geckos) or go all out and have all categories.

When I was at the county fair recently, I talked to one of the ladies there and she was concerned with getting the proper temps and such for reptiles in a building. I was like "Well, that doesn't make sense because there's a reptile swap-show one building over twice a month all the time!" Hahaha

I'd imagine it would be great fun for breeders and owners of all ages.

I just find it weird that, especially with the popular more friendly critters like leopard geckos that there isn't some sort of fanciers club any where where they at least hold contests? You're right, there's even guppy breeder associations and shows why not for geckos (and other reptiles)? :main_huh:

There's some amount of agreement about which morphs are which, but once you establish that, there's no agreement about exactly what constitutes the best example of a specific morph.

Ron was talking about this on Gecko radio.. That and every Billy-Bob joe-dean naming morphs something else so they can call it their own..They gave some good insight on the subject..
