Hi there,
My name is Yvette and I am an undergraduate Animal Science student. I'm writing a paper for my major's mandatory writing class and the professor let us choose the topic of our final work. I'm writing about cryptosporidium and the use of HBC (hyperimmune bovine colostrum) as treatment versus proper management and quarantine. We are allowed to do surveys/interviews so if anyone would be willing to help me out by replying to this I'd be really grateful. Information from the survey will be used in the paper; however I will NOT quote anyone without their direct permission.

1. How many leopard geckos do you own? Do you breed them?

2. How long have you had them?

3. How long have you been keeping reptiles?

4. Have you ever heard of Crypto? Do you know what it is?

5. Have you ever dealt with/owned a reptile infected with Crypto?

6. If so, what did you do for treatment? Quarantine/management practices? What was the outcome?

7. Have you ever heard of HBC?

8. If so do you think HBC would be effective for treating crypto? Should it be commercially available and how much would you pay for it?

9. Have you ever treated a reptile for crypto using HBC? What was the outcome?

10. Any additional thoughts or comments?

Thank you very much for looking at this survey, your time is appreciated.
Sincerely,
-Yvette

1. ~Currently 5, yes I do

2. ~The oldest one i've had for 2 years, the newest one about a month.

3. ~Only about 4 years, however have been working with them for much, much longer.

4. ~Oh yes. It's a protozoa that inhabits the GI tract.

5. ~None of my own, i've had several clients with geckos that had it.

6. ~The vet I was working with at the time was using Flagyl/Panacur...not sure why...The animal was obtained at a pet store and kept on sand...it ended up dying a month later from impaction & i'm sure the intestinal parasites played a role as well

7. ~Yep. Hyperimmune Bovine Colostrum.

8. ~Lots of wonderful vets are saying that it's the best treatment for Crypto. I think it should be commercially available, HOWEVER...my practice would probabbly wait for results from other hospitals before the investment. I have no idea how much i'd pay...I don't do any of the ordering.

9. ~Nope...but i'm curious what the outcome would be.

10. ~Good luck on your paper! Let us know how you did!

Thanks for the reply! Do you have contact information for any of those vets? I'd love to interview them about their experience with HBC.

Also I forgot some relevant questions for the survey:

1A. Are your leopard geckos housed individually or communally?

5A. Was the infected reptile housed communally or individually? Did its cagemates become infected?

5B. Were there any animals housed seperatly that became infected and what quarantine measures were being used at the time of their infection?
