F1 means the first generation, F2 is the second generation, etc.

If I were to cross a pure Afghan to a Red Stripe, the offspring would be F1 Afghan/Red Stripe crosses. When I breed the F1's together, their offspring will be F2 Afghan/Red Stripe crosses.

Oh okay thanks :) Also wouldn'y you come out with a weird type of thing because the red stripe would not be a pure subspecies. Also most of the subspecies don't have morphs why is that? And what subspecies are the morphs? I bealive they are a ton of mixes because thats how they came out because when leopard geckos were first in the usa and being bred they were all mixed together?

Sorry for all the questions everyone, Jake

Back to the original question... the original animals are called "foundation" animals, hence the "F". The number following the "F" in subsequent generations denotes how many generations they are removed from the original pair.

Foundation... offspring (F1)... offspring (F2).....

If you're talking about wild caught animals, then you're normally breeding pures to pures. But if you're developing your own line of something or you're lucky enough to hatch something that's new and genetically inherited, then the pairing would produce the F1 "whatever you're gonna call it".

Take the black pearls for instance. Whatever animal was the original black pearl was the foundation animal. The next generation would be F1, the next F2.
