I know crickets can carry parasites like pinworms and hookworms ... But can other types of feeds also carry them? Like mealworms, supers and Dubia roaches?
Some parasites have direct life-cyles, which means they only need one host to complete their lifecycles. Thes types of parasites cannot infect two hosts at the same time. So, if the feeders are 'infected', they cannot infect the geckos.
Then there are parasites that have an 'indirect lifecycle', which means they need an intermediate host in order to complete their lifecycles. In this case, if the feeders are infected, they can transfer the infection to a secondary host (geckos).
My suggestion is for ALL of us to bone-up on which parasites can infect more than one host, and which cannot.
For example, pinworms and coccidia have a direct life-cycle. If the feeders are infected, they cannot infect the gecko. Hookworms have an indirect life-cycle and need the feeders to complete their lifecycles, which means that geckos CAN become infected if the lifecycle is not complete in the feeders.
Cockroaches do not have pathogens that are transferrable to reptiles and amphibians
They are much cleaner feeders than the crickets and mealworms. They are superior in every way to the crickets and mealworms and easier to care for. There is no legitimate reason not to feed roaches unless you have animals that wont eat them.
So do you know if the other feeders (Dubia, silks, meals, supers) can care the 'indirect lifecycle' parasites? I am guess yes ... That all living organisms can host .. But was not 100% sure. Do you know?
Fact is captive bred roaches will not carry any parasites that can or will infect your animals. I do not know about the mealworms as they are garbage. Use roaches and your animals will be better for it. No one regrets the benefits of roaches once they try them. In the next election you will see the people will vote for george Dubia bush!
he said George DUBIA Bush....LMAO!!!! it is legal to say LMAO, boy I hope so!
Marcia, GREAT point, can we get a "medical" area to this forum, I dunno a bunch of stickies, or something..... what to look for, what to do when, how to find a herp vet in your area.... ???????
