is it normal for leos to decrease their feeding and bowel movement during this time of the year? all my leos have decreased their feeding activities and only defecate every few days (the feces look normal). though they all look healthy and plump and shedding normally/regularly. (the temp has decreased just a few degrees in my herp room.) TIA for any feedback.

Yes that's perfectly normal, just keep tabs on her weight and she'll be fine :main_yes:

There are more proactive ways to dealing with the slowing down of feeding due to the OUTSIDE weather besides just watching the weight of your animal...

For starters, up your basking spot temps and raise the ambient air temps... The best rule of thumb you can go by for most species of lizard, including leopard geckos is, KEEP THEM HOT AND FEED THEM ALOT!!!

Basking spots of 95 and ambient air temps in the mid 80's will keep your leos feeding well all year round...

And also keep in mind that All glass aquariums are good for fish, not reptiles...

there's no mention of all-glass tanks in any of the first posts and i don't see its connection to the subject. thanks for the input though, very very informative. thanks again. :)

Why force them into unnatural behaviours?

It is in their nature to slow down in winter. Forcing them to stay active by pumping up the temps is not advisable.

Let them rest if they want to rest!!

I dont know, why keep them in unnatural habitats in your house??? Why feed them meal worms and other insects they will never come in contact with in their natural habitat... Why handle them??? Surely there is no one running around the middle east to pet leopard geckos and play with them... Certainly keeping them hot year round is not as "unnatural" as being kept in a glass aquarium or other things we subject our leos to on a daily basis...

IF you did a little natural history search you would see that in some parts of their range they do not slow down... Where they are from there is no winter season... It is wet and dry seasons... Not hot and cold ones... They dont need the rest...

So keep them hot and they will eat and be healthy all year round... Ok there Stuart???

Gregg M ...

I thought that there was a Leopard Gecko Spirit that kept all the wild Leopard Geckos fed and who took them out at lunch time and played with them.:D

Well that is the way that I heard it.:main_thumbsup:

Why be so hostile about it?

Less of the patronising big headed sarcasm please

btw, the ones not feeding as heartily as before are the two young adults and the subadult. the two juvies are eating normally (kinda), but not as gluttonous as before. feces are normal on the feeding individuals, and the feces of the (almost) non-feeding ones are solid but mostly urate. i think they all have this bioclock that says "it's winter time (whether it's warm or not in their enclosure) and you gotta slow down".
