Hey guys, i was reading TUG's (The Urban Gecko) care sheet on geckos...and they feed 1/2" crickets to hatchlings under 6 weeks and 3/4 inch-Adult to geckos 6+ weeks old...what do you think about that? Do you think it is a good idea? I mean i feed my hatchlings reg. mealies...do you think its would be good to feed 1/2" to the geckos that eat crickets?

I feed my hatchlings mealworms for 2 reasons:

--many first time leo buyers don't want to deal with crickets
--especially in my divided tanks, if I feed crickets they will get through the partitions and it may be hard for everyone to get enough to eat. Also they move quickly and less skillful hunters may not get enough.

I would imagine that if TUG is using 1/2" crickets it must be working for them. I might start with 1/4" crickets if I were feeding them to my hatchlings, but I think geckos can manage larger prey items than we think (the tiny crickets are also hard to see and catch). I once had an 11 gram hatchling scarf down 2 large superworms with no ill effects!

My baby leos are eating dubia nymphs.....no problems. The baby leos are shy, but I come back to an empty tank and see leo dropping a day or so later and no dubias in the tank..... 1+1 must equal :D

Our hatchlings get baby superworms. I tried 1/4" crickets but they had trouble catching them until they were a couple weeks old. I get a kick out of seeing them tear up that worm :) plus there's no doubt to who is eating how much as they take it from the tongs. But whatever works best for you is the thing to do :)
