I am wondering if I should just lay the apple and potato pieces on top of the bedding or mix them into it for my mealies to eat on. Which is best?

I would just lay it on top. That way it is easy to see if they have completely consumed it or not. If not consumed in a day or two they you can take it out as not to create mold.

A lot of waste if you throw all away.....Orange peel will last and be eaten until your gecko grows a beard. Agree that potato is a mold producer and should be watched over, if used. Carrots are a no problem item..dries differently..a whole carrot shoved to the depth will feed all stages on all levels....if you will note your containers at times, you will find that you have dead and usually dried young meal worms.... ..not getting moisture at lower levels.............catrrot rounds through the whole mix....not just on top.
Same with orange skins.......need to test other stuff to know....
.....BUT please don't throw your orange peels away.lots of good stuff in them for the gecko. ****Fresh pineapple skin is a great item too(only on top), but creates plenty of fruit flies (knats)....

Meal worms unless refrigerated, will want to eat and have moisture 24/7 as normals are to go through the stages of reproducing...

.....take care.. / .. HJ

Thanks for the replies I think I'm off to get a few oranges and some more carrots and stop using potatoes as they do mold fast.
