Feeding Slurry?

So I put Tiamat on the slurry seeing as how she hasn't eaten, and hasn't appeared to poop or anything for over a week. She hasn't even passed a urate. The weird thing is, is that she does look healthy and she acts healthy. I suspect she might be ovulating but I don't know. Since the beginning of this month she has become gradually harder to feed and now she'll only lick at her food, make like she's going to eat it, and then turns away.

But in an effort to get some poop out of her I fed her some slurry yesterday. Not much but just enough to get her used to it.

My question is how often should I feed the slurry to her? And about how long should I be feeding her. Yesterday she licked at the slurry for about two minutes straight and then I had to keep trying to put some on her face to lick off as she kept turning away. Overall, the session lasted about 10 minutes I think.

You should feed your gecko slurry as often as you think it needs it. You said that she looks heathy, so I'm going to assume that she hasn't lost any noticeable weight. I would then only feed her once in the evening just to get her appetite going.

When I fed my gecko slurry, I would put drops of it on her nose using a syringe that I bought from a pet store. After she licked off the first drop, I'd put another drop of it on her nose. Don't get any in her nostrils though. You can also put drops of it at the corners of the gecko's mouth. Syringes are usually in the section for birds in pet stores or you can ask a vet clinic for one. Make sure it has a plastic tip though and not a needle.

Also, be patient with her. Some geckos will stress out when force fed for the first time. Good luck.

I use a tear dropper. Seems to do okay. And Tiamat doesn't seem the type to stress easily.

I'll feed her a little every evening then.

Thank you. :)

I'll try asking my question in this thread to avoid thread spam.

So I've been feeding Tiamat slurry for four days now, but I have yet to see any poo. Our feeding sessions last about 10 to 15 minutes, and she's getting better about accepting it. How long at a time should I feed her? And when should I start trying to give her solid food again?

Sorry I missed this thread! Feeding slurry to a gecko tht is simply 'off food' can be a double-edged sword. First of all, feeling the slurry should help produce a stool for a veterinary examination within a couple of days providing you are feeding about 1ml (1cc) at each feeding, which can be 2X daily for adult geckos. The downside is, that if the gecko has a full belly of slurry, it will not want to eat regular food.

If you gecko looks healthy, has not lost significant weight, and it otherwise being normal (except for not being interested in food), the slurry is not appropriate. If it's simply a case of an adult female going off food because she is ovulating, I would hold off on slurry feeding altogether.

Is she in a room where she can smell males or other ovulating females? If so, then move her to another room. If you plan on breeding her, then now is the time to do that considering she is an adult, and in good health and weight. Otherwise, you will just need to join the same club all of us are in when we have ovulating females that aren't interested in food... lol!

Hi Marcia, thank you for responding. :)

I put her on the slurry because she hadn't eaten or pooped in over a week. I'm trying to get a sample out of her so I can test her for bacteria or parasites. So far she hasn't pooped or even produced a urate or anything. I'm not sure if she's ovulating. A few days ago I thought she was as her belly looked very pink and she looked like she had darker pink spot forming near the center. Now it looks normal. I check on her daily to see any new developments. I'm very worried that she hasn't produced any waste. She did eat ONE super over a week ago, but there was no poo produced from that.

I guess I need a syringe or something that measures in cc's. I'm just using an eyedropper.

The only other gecko I have is Mandarin and she is too young to ovulate, atleast I would assume. She's only about 6 months or so, and is eating fine.

It's just all so confusing. She's not eating or producing waste, but I've been giving her slurry. I would assume she would have produced SOMETHING by now. I have checked to see if she changed potty spots, but nothing. It's just so bizarre. Is she just completely absorbing everything I put in her????? Does it all go in her tail or something???

Marcia that club really sucks by the way, LOL

Agreed! :main_no:

I am one foot out of the club by the way. This year, one of my usual non-eating ovulating female decided to lay those infertile eggs (she laid 2 clutches already); and she has been eating very well! :main_yes:

I'm very happy for you. I hope Tiamat will do the same thing and surprise me. lol At the moment, I'm actually more worried about her not pooping than eating. lol Jeez, if it isn't one thing it's another.

Perhaps I should take a picture of her belly. You guys might be able to see something I don't.
