Ferret Problem

My friend down the street as three ferrets, and this HUGE cage. Well, one of the ferrets must have fallen from the top level or so in the cage. He limps and everything. I went to her house yesterday to trim their nails for her, and see about the leg. There is a lot of swelling, and it just hangs limp, but he definitely feels pain if you touch the leg too hard. I was wondering if anyone knew if this could be a broken leg, or what? I don't know mammals too much, so I can't say for sure. She's also wondering how much it would be for the vet to fix the ferret up. Thanks for any help!!

Oh yeah, we know. She's 13 though...and her STUPID father agreed to three ferrets, and doesn't have the money to take them :(

They shouldnt own what they cannot afford to keep. I always see this with dogs. Nobody understands the money that you actually spend on them after the 500-1500 purchase. How about a humane society? Their costs are cheaper,, if its broken something has to be done.

Hmph. Well, they SHOULD go to the vet, and I agree, they absolutely should not own something they can't afford, but they do, and now this animal needs help. I also agree with looking at the human society, but if they won't even do that then they may just have to wrap it snugly and hope the way it heals (if it's broken) doesn't permanently damage the ferret... Poor buddy.

Ferrets are not low maintenance pets at all. They're like, what $100-$130 each, but they run into a LOT of health problems.
So, even if this gets fixed, I hope they realize that they could end up spending over double what they're worth in vet bills EACH if they run into these health issues.
Sounds to me like they do need a new home with people who are more knowledgeable with ferrets.
Not to sound harsh, but brewing an owner of two ferrets, it's hard to hear stuff like this.

Yeah, I know. I've been talking to her about finding them a new home...but she's 13. She's not really listening.

I don't really know why a thirteen year old has such a high maintenance pet to begin with, sounds like they didn't do much research and bought them because they're, "cute" or "fun.

Maybe they'll understand when one of their ferrets starts getting tumors, or loses fur or gets lethargic. Then their non payable vet bill will be about $600 at least.

Eh well, not taking this out on you, just...it's frustrating lol.

If they're not going to take care of them properly, nor listen to any ones advice maybe you should consider making an anonymos call to the humane society. This is animal cruelty. Although I'm sure thats hard to do to a freind, don't you think it would be best for the animals. Maybe if the officials told them to take it to the vets, it might make the decision to find them a new home a little easier.

I'll be talking to her today, hopefully. I'm going to convince her to give the ferret up, and hopefully all of them. See if I can convince her to get maybe some pet rats or something similar. I knew this would end up happening, her dad is just retarded. I'm sure she'll listen to me. Maybe I'll hook her up with a baby leo or crestie :)

You think trading them for something else that might not get taken care of, or not get proper vet care if needed is a good idea. Seams to me these people are not responsable enough to own pets. JMO

Poor little guy. We have a ferret and I couldn't imagine not giving her the care that she needs. I have to agree with Rick about the chance of them not being responcible for any animal....even pet rats get sick and need medical attention. My sons hamster injured his leg in the wheel and we had to take it to the vet. No matter how small the animal is , it can end up costing . i feel sorry for the little girl. Pets are a natural part of childhood and it's sad when a parent agrees to getting an animal but then refuses to help with the cost of caring for it.

Also please consider a ferret rescue...there's a ton of them if you do some research online. A lot of the time these companies will actually front the money to treat the animal, as long as it's surrendered to them. At least then you'd know that it IS being cared for.
