After the egg is laid how long does it take the egg to fertilize? Because i just candled two eggs from the same clutch about a week after they were laid and one looked infertile (yellow) and the other one looked fertile (red).

The eggs are fertilized before they are laid. Chances are if you don't see a red "bulls eye" right away, it's probably no good. I've yet to have a yellow egg turn fertile on me, and ive had quite a few bad ones. But let it go until it molds or caves in...you'll know if its good or bad. Hope that helps you a little.

Not always true...about half my eggs that were laid this year (maybe 10 out of 20?) developed the "bulls eye" at least a week after they were laid.

I'm convinced that determining if an egg is fertile has more to do with the quality of the shell after it's hatched, rather than seeing a bulls eye right away...

Don't coun't chickens before they hatch...just sayin'....:main_laugh:

Thats why I said to incubate them until they mold, just to be sure. Personally all my fertile eggs had a bulls eye right away. I agree with the shell though. Mine have either been water balloons (infertile) or hard shell (fertile) every time.
