Hi everyone,

What are the main signs that a gecko has MBD? One of our geckos was a rescue from a horrible pet shop. When we first got him he was in a bad way but we have had him about 6 months now and he's gained weight and is looking really well. I am concerned though as he has always walked and stands differently to my other gecko, he always picks his feet up and shakes them before putting them down again. He just seems more fragile than my other gecko. Could this be a sign of MBD? I've attached some photos of him, what do you think? Many thanks for your help :)

About a month after we got him (don't worry he isnt on sand anymore!)

The gecko looks great! I do not see any signs of MBD in his leg bones. If you are keeping him on reptile carpet, he may be shaking his legs because his toenails are clinging to the carpet.

The symptoms of early MBD are shakiness, though. Just make sure he gets plenty of calcium!

Ditto w/ Marica!! Also you can make sure your using calcium powder w/ D3 and w/ NO phosphorus in it will help too. Pinkies are another great source of calcium and D3 too. Since your gecko is at a good wieght, he doesn't look like he needs them, if you do use them only give him at most a pinky 1-2 times per month. B/C they are high in fat. I now use Rep-Cal w/ D3 and Phosphorus Free calcium powder for my adults and breeder's b/c I read that the insects have all the Phosphorus and too much of it is bad for the leo's and counter acts the w/ calcium.

Mine shakes his feet when putting it down on the carpet also...I guess it could be his toenails getting stuck cause he gets stuck when lunging for crickets also...

The first signs are shakiness, and they can also start to limp or walk on their feet funny. It should be pretty easy to tell if it's the carpet doing it - you should be able to see a nail catching before the gecko shakes his leg. You gecko looks great. By the time you start seeing the back and limbs curving the MBD is well progressed.

Thanks so much for all your advice :)

He is on repti carpet at the moment so Ill watch him closely to check if its that. I alternate between dusting his food with calypso pure calcium powder and T-Rex calcium with D3. I have never tried him with a pinkie, I might give him one as a treat and see what he thinks :) I really hope hes not got MBD hes a real sweetie.

Thanks again for all your help.
