Well My GF just lost her a job a couple weeks ago and its getting a little frustrating. We live together and Ive always been the primary income. But her part was greatly needed. Now everywhere she's qualified for had like 200+ resumes for position  little Mc Jobs like petes coffee and what not say shes over qualified. MAN this is just horrible. Economy is in the pooper and here in the silicon valley we feel it pretty fast as our chief export is technology. Man its just so irritating.. right at the holiday season too. Man I'm just going to go get another job at kohles or something. It just sucks that my generation almost HAS to have duel income to make it. Well Jerome welcome to the real world. LMAO

:( That is pretty lame dude. What a stupid excuse for NOT hiring someone.. being overqualified. And.. at Peets of all places. Tamara worked there for a long time. There were numerous people there that had their degrees from UC Berkeley.. and they were still working at a Coffee Shop. Living in the Bay Area is just.. lame.. Its expensive. Its hard to find a good job... and its EXPENSIVE. Lets move.

That sucks man... I can sympathize, living in New York hasn't been easy either. Moving is a great option ;) especially considering the way the economy is heading...

Jerome and Ashley, that totally sucks. :main_thumbsdown: This economy is not a friendly place to be right now, that's for sure. And I'm with David, the bay is an EXPENSIVE place to live. Heck, Calfornia is expensive. Sigh.

Hang in there.

I have a friend in LA who lost her job 3 years ago and her and her husband went from a $4k a month condo and 30-40K cars to..... riding the bus and living with their son in 2 years.

This economy sucks and I hear LA is beyond expensive(not that NJ is cheap by all means)

Hang in there :afro:

Hey Jerome and David,

I live at Lake Berryessa which is up a mountain and 11 miles from town but the rent and houses are cheaper. You just have to use propane instead of natural gas, have a well for water and use satilite tv and internet. The internet part kinda sucks but I love it up here :)

Here's alittle advice, take it for what it is. If people are telling you you're overqualified.... lie. What are they going to do, fire you when they find out you DO have a college degree? Na... THese places don't fire, they just hire and burn people out.

In response to Pauls post.. The biggest mistake people make is living on the financial edge. My wife and I live in the DC area. We make together what alot of people in this area make alone and we save money. We own two cars (but ride our bicycles to work) and pay $1200 a month in rent for a one bedroom apt and still save money and invest for our future. Reason is, we live below our means. We don't eat out 10 times a week, we don't go to bars, we don't spend any money we don't have to (except for the occaisional date night). If you can afford a 30-40k car, you should buy a 15-20k car. If you get a raise, dont buy a more expensive car and move into a more expensive house. This is the reason this country is going down the debt tube. People spend every dime they get and don't realize they don't have to. What you want and what you need are two different things. If it's close, walk. If you have a bike, use it. If you're not using it sell it, turn it off, or otherwise rid yourself of the burden of paying for things unused. I can't tell you how crazy it drives me when I see people on these forums say they have 20 geckos yet they're complaining about being broke, moving back in with mom and dad and bringing their managerie with them but still talking about scraping together money for that next lizard. Thats silly. This whole country needs to get a grip on their financial situations and realize they're way overdoing it and can have fun and enjoy themselves without spending all of their money.

Bottom line, lifestyle is not more important than survival and well being. And if you have survival and wellbeing covered lifestyle falls into place. Our generation doesn't neccesarily HAVE to dual income to make it, but, most aren't willing to adjust their lifestyles to suit their income levels. I used to sell cars and I can't tell you how many people I saw would come in and buy 3x more car than they should. Make 20k and take on $500 a month car payments. This is the mentality. "I make $1500 a month, and i pay $1200 a month in rent, so that leaves me $300 for a car payment!". It's a very unfortunate mass state of ignorance that people have about money.

Anyway, sorry to hijack your thread. But I had to put my own rant there. Good luck, I'm sure that you'll come through it ok. Just put your head down and suckerpunch life in the jaw.

My friend had a 277k a year salary and her husband had 2.3 million in a trust fund he never withdrew from for 20+ years;)

She got fired for being disabled from her law firm(never sue a lawyer) and her husband's step mother decided she wanted the money instead and cleaned it out ....

I assure you a baptist priest and a disabled woman weren't living beyond there means ;)

Ah trust funds...

I've got a starving artist friend that only gets to make her awful music because of her trust fund. (she is starving by choice... she's incredibly talented but insists on recording such infamous tracks as her screaming like someone being stabbed mid orgasm with guitar and keyboard music)

Hey I just picked up my first job in 6 years. My oldest entered 1st grade freeing up a bit o' time & I lost my wee income of watching a family member's kid. I didn't want the responsibility of a boss (former payroll person) or honestly to have to Ho Ho HO every miserable customer. I'm delivering newspapers. I have 120-130 papers, 6 days a week (only Sat is a morning one) & I'm making around $200 each week. Not bad since it works into my mom schedule.

Tell your girlfriend to check out temp agencies. That's how I broke into payroll during my 1st year out of college. I can't tell you how many times I heard "over qualified". Temping is great because it lets you test the company. If you don't like the people or the job, move on & take the next temp position available.

Good luck!

I have to agree with Paul J sometimes life just gives you crap instead of lemons to make good old lemonaide!!! I am not disagreeing that some people are terrible with money and some people live way beyond their means but there are people that do try and save and it just doesn't seem to work out. I own a daycare, I don't get rich but i help my husband out with our bills. We live in a 85,000 manufactured home that my husband has worked his a** to fix into something that is nice. Yeah I have 20 geckos and yeah I have to save to get that next one BUT I don't ask for anyone else to buy them for me and I don't spend anyone elses money. I listen to the screams of tiny ones all day and I change those 100+ diapers and listen to my parents explain why little johnny needs more attention then anyone else so I deserve the pleasure that I get out of my reptiles! And if my mother owned 1000 spiders ( yuck hate them and no she doesn't own even 1) and she needed to move in with my.. I would make a room for her and those damnable things BECAUSE she raised me and she clothed me and if she needed me I would be there without a complaint. I hope to God that I have raised my kids the same way.

Ruby Miracle.
