First egg infertile - normal?

2 weeks ago, I put Zhului and Bubu together, and I watched them mated once. I then put Bubu back into his own cage. Last night, Zhului laid ONE egg, it feels like a heavy water balloon and candled yellow. I figured its most likely not fertile. I checked her belly and she doesn't have another egg in there. So my question is, how common is it for the first clutch to be a single infertile egg? Can I expect her next clutch to be fertile? Or shall I put the two together again?

I'm trying to avoid putting them together one more time, as there are always risks putting 2 geckos together; plus I only want 2 good eggs, I'd rather she just lay 2-3 clutches and get it done.

If anyone remembers, Zhului ovulated in October last year and I paired her with Marly. She laid only one clutch and both eggs were fertile (became MoJo and C.MerMer ;)). So this is her second time; theoretically, it should be better than the first time, but her first clutch is just ONE infertile egg...?

Ok then, Friday night fever for Bubu again! On a side note, Zhului wolfed down 12 lats after she laid that egg.

Yes, that is exactly what I'm fear of! Perhaps I should wait for her next clutch; if they are still infertile, then I'll put them back together.

I have had quite a few of my geckos lay only 1 egg on occasion, especially at the beginning of the season, but not confined to first timers or to the beginning of the season. One of my geckos did lay 2 eggs 5 days apart last time.

I have a female that is laying single egg clutches this year. Last year, she gave me several 2 egg clutches, all of which were fertile. This year shes only laying 1 egg clutches for some reason. Shes big and healthy and so are the eggs. I guess I will just have to be happy with what she decides to give up lol

Zhului just laid her second clutch (with 2 eggs); that was only about 13 days from when she laid her first single egg clutch. When I looked into her lay box this morning, I saw one good looking egg in front of her with her stepping on the other egg. She could've just laid them minutes ago, since she hasn't gotten to the burying stage yet. However, the one she had her foot on is all squashed and feels extremely soft; I candled it and its yellow. The other good looking white egg also feels a little like water balloon but I didn't candle this one. I put both eggs in the incubator anyway.

Can fertile eggs feel like water balloons and candle yellow when they are very FRESHLY laid? I know they're most likely not fertile (again), just want to check if there is any slim chance. That's ok, I can put Bubu back with her again; I just hope Bubu can produce some viable sperm (he is a 9.5 year old first timer).

Some updates, the 2 new eggs weren't fertile; they turned brown and sloppy in the incubator. I tried to pair up Bubu and Zhului again last night, but Zhului was not receptive. She was raising and wiggling her tail when Bubu looked at her direction! I think she is done for now; I'll pair them up again when she is showing obvious signs of ovulation again.

p.s. I checked her belly and I don't think I see the ovulation spot.
