So I walk into the local reptile/amphibian shop in my town to get crickets for my frogs and what do I see on the counter in a small plastic container, A gargoyle gecko. I couldnt stop looking at how cool she was and asking all sorts of questions...so i bought it, luckily i had a tank set up at home that the guy there said would be sufficient. He also said that the gecko was a she (he said they were too small to be sexed but because it was cheap it was a female). The only thing i was really wondering is how to tell when she is big enough if she is definitely a she and whats the best thing to feed her other than crickets and repashy?

Congrats on your first gargoyle!

Rapashy CGD should be the main staple of the gargoyle's diet. Crickets can be offered no more than once a week and should be dusted with calcium, if they will even eat crickets. Gargoyles are very picky eaters and most will not eat insects, so if yours refuses crickets, don't force the issue because it will just stress them. (Kinda like your mom making you eat lima beans as a kid before you could game on playstation.)

Usually once the gargoyle is about 10grams you can see a either a nice bulge or a slight bulge behind the vent. However, if you have a loupe, you can look for 3-4 rows of pores just in front of the vent area...if you see pores, then it's a boy. Note, females gargoyles are more common and about 85% of all new hatchlings will be girls.

If you don't have a gram scale, then you should invest in one (they are cheap at Wal-Mart and Target), just get one that measures in the 10th of a gram. Anytime you are talking about your gargoyles: health, housing, breeding, ect you will be asked how much it weighs, age pretty much means nothing when talking about a gargoyle as they all all grow at difference rate everything is based on weight.

Hope this helps....any questions, just ask. I am extremely familiar with them and have been breeding them for 2 years now.

For your first gecko I'd just look up some sexing pics and wait til you see the bulge or not for sure. You might not know what you're looking at if you look for pores on a small gecko.

You might get some pointers if you post the setup you are put her in too.

Congratulations on your first gecko, you picked a great one in a gargoyle!!
