i have had my male leo gecko now for about 5years and ive always kept him on sand and never had a problem with him eating it at all but i recently bought a female and i had her on the sand too and she starting eating it i noticed so i got her off the sand and onto paper towels and started reading and i see a lot of people dont like sand and think its unsafe. so i browsed these forums and noticed most people are usuing paper towls or tile for the floors of cages...does anyone have any other safe suggestions for the geckos that would be more appealing and natural looking for the cage? thanks

Natural stone tiles such as travertine or marble are the most natural thing out there, as they live in rocky formations in their natural habitat, they dont live on sand so if anything sand is as unnatural as paper towels. Tumbled stone tiles are your best bet for a natural look...

I would never use sand on any reptile...

I would never use sand on any reptile either, not even Beardies. If you actually do research on Beardies it's interesting, they don't even live on sand either. They live on hard, compacted clay out in the wild.
But I'm getting off-topic. I use paper towels primarily because of the low cost and easy clean-up, but what Rich said is very good advice. :main_yes:

Besides tile and paper towels, your other main option is going to be reptile carpet. It usually looks very nice and is safe for your geckos, unfortunately it can be quite a pain to clean and it gathers odors fairly quickly(in most cases). I currently house my young gecko on green repti-carpet but I will be switching over to a nice tile later this week because my gecko enjoys spreading his calcium all over the tank and it's very difficult to scrub that out on a regular basis :main_rolleyes:

Tile looks nice, cleans easily, holds heat well & is pretty cheap even for the nice pieces. Check out a tile store for their remnants.
