Are snakes really as bad as i think they are? or is it just a stupid fear that i have for no good reason other then i think that it would hurt like hades to get bitten

There are some species of snake that are naturally aggressive but most ball pythons (there's always exceptions to this rule as with all animals) tend to be very mild mannered. I looove snakes, so I'm biased, but I can understand your fear! I'm petrified of arachnids.

I find it funny that men shy away from snakes more than women do. ;)

I've been bitten once by a baby ball and it was completely my own fault. It was a feeding responce and I didn't drop the food into the tub fast enough and I got nailed. Yes it hurt a lot, but those teeth are so small and it felt like a bunch of burning needles for about 10 min or so.

The worse bite from a reptile I've had was from a Leopard Gecko.

Blood was pouring down my arm right after it happened, first pic is after 15 min of applied preasure.

This was after a couple hours..... it left a nice scar.

Yeah, keep away from Rosy Boas, Spotted and Childrens Pythons, they are really bitty. There are more I'm sure, but those are the ones we have that I'm familar with their wanting to bite all the time.

IMO, snakes are just like lizards without the legs (or at least that's what I tell myself every single time I reach down to pick up Riagen). Each one has its own personality and temperment. They can be just as affectionate and interested in having you hold them as any other reptile you own. If you can handle your geckos, you can probably hold a snake.

I can sit for 5 hours getting tattooed with NO problems but when it comes to a snake bite for some weird reason i just can't get close.... maybe i think they will smell my fear and just eat my arm cause they can i dunno.

but to all those that keep them i commend you and have mad respect that you don't have my fear.

I've kept several constrictors throughout the years and I've been bitten six times or so, all of which I can take the blame for. IMO it doesn't hurt as much as it surprises the crap out of you, although last time I was bitten my RTB decided to hold on for a while. It reminds me of that joke about the person who nurses a snake back to health and gets bitten. The person says, "After all I've done for you, how could you bite me?" The reply, "You knew I was a snake, B****." :main_laugh:

I had a 6 foot Burmese bite my ear and try to swallow it- it didn't really hurt. Their teeth aren't really all that sharp. I did basically pass out after she was back in the cage, though. More from the surprise of it than actually being injured, though. I agree- gecko bites are more painful, not that they are super painful either. I got nailed worse by a pissed off swallow than any herp has ever bit me. i saw someone get chomped by a rough neck monitor- that bled a LOT, but it didn't hurt since their teeth are so sharp.

With constrictors you worry more about them wrapping around your neck and suffocating you, not the initial bite. Those beasts are strong once they have a loop or two around something.

I would say there is no reason at all to fear a ball python. Even the moody ones would rather ball up in their hide than strike at you. We have been keeping ball pythons for nearly three years and my boyfriend has never been bitten and I have only been bitten once. I had been playing with my pet rats and though I washed my hands before I got the snake out, I didn't wash up my arm, which is exactly where she bit me. It did not hurt at all! It scared me more than anything. It did bleed a little but seriously, no pain.
I would say a good 90% of bits are brought on by the person, not the snake. As long as you thoroughly wash your hands, and arms in some cases :) and keep the scent of prey away while handling, then there really isn't a reason for them to bite you. We have also noticed that when we handle the less friendly snakes, once you have them in your hands they are fine, they would rather flee.

This is a couple minutes after it happened.
