I have no idea what went wrong. We got the vermiculite and put it in a crafting bead box (large square cubbies more then big enough for the egg an hatchling) and misted the vermiculite just enough. I can't tell if I made it too wet though. I can't really feel the moister.

Izabellas first clutch I'm guessing are duds. They are yellowish in color and SLIGHTLY fuzzyish. I found her second clutch the morning after she laid them. I dated them and put them in their little cubes in the tray/container thing. One was dented on top though making me think it was either already bad or she stepped on it. The other one was nice and perfect looking.

I check on them every day and they started to fuzz over. They are still white in color and look just like they did when I found them...just fuzzy like a hairy peach.

Could it be because they were too moist? How can her SECOND clutch be bad? What do you recommend we house the eggs in? We want to do this right and don't want her going through the stress of mating and laying if we are just going to keep "killing" the eggs. I feel so terrible.

I read about breeding from different websites but they all vary so much I can't tell whats right or what really works. I need your guy's help.

thanks. Here is the mommy:

Are you using airtight containers?
Mold is usually because the moisture is too high.
Any airtight container will work with a .8 to 1 ratio.
You need a digital scale and need to weigh the container (say 10grams) add perlite (say 20 grams) then add water (20X.8=16grams) Your total should now be 46 (container 10, perlite 20, water 16)
Hope this helps!!
Good luck with your next batch

What a pretty Crested! All of our Crested eggs have gone bad this season and I haven't done anything differently. I'm also at a loss.

Wow, sorry to hear that:( . I've had a few bad eggs this year but have done ok so far. My best hatchling of the year silt the egg but drown before it could get out. It was a nice harley with full pinstripe:main_angry:

If that was your females first clutch then they are bad about half the time. She will lay you a few more soon:)

I have gotten almost 75 eggs this summer. I had some first time layers and proven females drop nice clutches. Like the other replies, the first-timers usually get the white fungus/mold. I also overdid the water in one of the containers with proven female eggs and lost a few that way to the same fungus or mold. I go with the 50-50 water to vermiculite and have a 90-95% hatch rate with good eggs. The hardest part for me is not micro managing the eggs and just letting them do their thing.

If your using vermiculite and having problems with mold or rotting eggs can I suggest either hatchrite or APS (aquatic pond soil) You can get that from Home Depot. It's in the garden area and is used for pond plants. Its a ceramic chip deal that you soak and it will change color if it needs moisture. I've had good reults with it this year.
