Gecko in need of desperate help

Hello,

My juvenile leopard gecko is in need of help. I have not been providing him proper nutrients, and his shedding process has gone amuck. He has skin stuck in his eyelid, so he can't see his food/too stressed to eat it, and I believe he may be having constipation, due to red swelling and bits of poop in his anal area. I am unable to reach a vet, and yet I have no idea how to solve his problem.

His tank set-up is normal, I've checked around and it's fine. No sand, there is proper heating, etc. I just really screwed up on his diet, and I really need to fix this mess I put him in. (He was on mainly mealworms)

Problems:
1. Starvation (How to feed him, what to feed him)
2. Skin stuck in eye and possibly other places (how to remove it)
3. Possible constipation, swelling, possible infection

"Contact a vet" posts are useless. Please post something that will be of some use. He needs help ASAP.

You admitted you screwed up, now he pays the consequences and you come here asking for help with an attitude, unreal. Be reponsible and take him to the vet which is the only person that can help if you are saying he has swelling and possible infection.

He might not be eating due to stress and illness, he may very well die with out proper care.

Understand that only minor issues can be delt with at home. All you can do is give him a soak for the shed problem but then the more serious problems need to be treated by a vet anyway.

You mentioned red swelling in his anal area, that could mean prolapse which the only way can be treated is by seeing a vet. Alot of people will tell you, if you cant go to a vet or afford it, you shouldnt own a pet in the first place and I agree.. Why are you not able to see a vet?, this is a serious problem, if you cant take care of the animal mabye give the leo to someone who can?. Any pictures?

In the mean time, what was the diet exactly? The least that can be done is a soak in warm water, this may help with the shed issue. Be sure theres a humid hide in the enclosure aswell so he can use it. Also, im sure theres a vet you can Call, even if you cant get there.

calling a vet is useless, you need to go SEE a vet if theres concern for infection and inflammation. Im concerned you said red swelling in his anal area, if the case is prolapse you need vet attention immadietly, no one can here can help you with that.

You can give him a warm soak for constipation and giving him a 'steam' soak for his eye, then try to remove it with a qtip...its hard to tell how serious anything is without a picture.

Start feeding more variety, if you feed variety you dont have to worry about always dusting/supplementing.

Calling a vet is better than nothing.

How many mealworms how often? Do you use supplements and how?
Soaks may help, but if there is swelling and infection, and you can't (or won't) get him to a vet, maybe you should consider rehoming him to a rescue.

You can use plain saline solution for contacts to help loosen the stuck eye sheds, squirt a stream into his eye creases to flush any stuck debris. I wouldn't suggest using a qtip as the cotton end could cratch the cornea or eye surface esp. With a stuck shed. You could end up just rubbing that bit of shed all over the eye surface leading to corneal abrasions and eventual corneal ulcerations. You should try to "blow" it out with a saline stream from the bottle. Soak the eye with saline for about 5 minutes 2x a day and hopefully by the second day of treatment the shed is out. As far as the red anus goes, your on your own with that one. With out pix I can even begin to venture assistance there except if it is a prolapse keep the area moist with a thick sugar/water soluton to tr and shrink the prolapse back down. If its stuck shed causing the red irritation the soaks could help get the shed out thus by ending the irritation. If its gotten to the point of infection you WILL need a vet. Keep your viv temps higher, around 96-98*f to promote appetite and check out golden gate geckos slurry recipe in the health section I believe to help your leo along until its eating on its own again. Good luck.
