Gecko Scoliosis??

Hi there everyone.

I'd like to add another female gecko to my current tank (once I'm sure the one I have is in fact female).

The Pet store i get my animals from will hold on to the Gecko for me for the quarantine period of 3 weeks.

The gecko they have in now apparently has mild Scoliosis?

The owner is telling me their supplier said it was merely cosmetic. I took a look at her, it basically has a bump on her back right in between her 2 back legs.

Would it be ok for me to take her once the quarantine period is up? I'm new to geckos, so any medical type of problems I have no reference on unfortunately.

Thanks for the help.

I would not take her if you are not experianced. It sounds like it is MBD (Metabolic Bone Diease), and even if she could be nursed back to health it takes a very experianced person to do so. They are just telling you that so that they can sell a sick gecko and get your money to buy another one.

Welcome to GF!

Even someone WITH experiance might not be able to handle the commitment of nursing back to health an animal with MBD. It's not impossible, it can be done in some cases but it takes a lot of patience, commitment and sometimes $$. I would wait for a healthier gecko to come along...in fact, I would look elsewhere to purchase one. Why not check out some of the breeders that are site sponsers at the top? They're all wonderful.

Oh just a PS: Even though some places tell you that they "quarantine" their animals for X amount of weeks before they sell them, you should definately do your own quarantine. To some pet stores quarantine means just put the cage on the other side of the room. Always better to be safe than sorry.

the big chain store that ends in mart doesn't even quarantine their reptiles before putting them out for sale. They come straight out of the box, into the cage with the others. they only quarantine birds and small animals
