So i am getting my first crested gecko in may but the entire gecko species is new to me, unfortunately i've been searching care sheets and can't find this information on any of them. My chameleon had a lower temperament and i could not/should not have handle him till about 5 weeks of care. I just want to know, what's a reasonable time for them to get used to me and their cage so i can start handling them so i can gain some trust between us? I have adhd so i normally can't stand not being able to handle my animals but i still have the willpower to resist haha. Thank you!

i Gave my animals two weeks. Try making them comfortable with you through food about a week in. By holding either bugs or gecko diet up to them. It gives you a positive association. This is what worked for me but every gecko is different just take it slow and trust your instincts.

Ok! i'll try that and if mine is a little more startled than he should be by two weeks i'll do it a bit longer. With chameleons i always got juveniles because they die pretty quick but these guys last a while so i plan to get an adult that's around 18 months old

I didn’t realize chameleons had such a short lifespan (had to look that up, thanks for pushing me to learn something new lol). At 18 months you may end up with a gecko that’s been socialized a bit which would make your experience easier. where do you plan on getting the gecko?

i plan on getting my gecko at an expo, last time i bought one from a breeder i got it from a bad breeder and lets just sayyyyy, it did not end well. The breeder was good with other animals but inexperienced with chameleons, or maybe just an inexperienced breeder. I got it from cbreptile, i also don't want one from a pet store so that's why i chose the expo

i recommend going to the repticom website and looking at the breeders that will be at the show before you go because there can still be bad breeders at an expo. If you look into it and read reviews and such you’ll make sure your getting the best animal you can and find the people who will talk to you about the individual geckos. Just a tip because my first Leo had a lot of issues when I first got him and I skipped the whole research part.

When you find the gecko you like at the show, ask the breeder whether it likes to be handled. Most breeders will let you hold the gecko right there. Some crested geckos (I have one like this) never socialize. I bought this gecko as a breeder and I think he had been kept in a rack his whole life and not really held at all. On the other hand, the majority of my geckos are fine with it.

Wow i did not realize reptile shows had so many cool things to then. I like them because you can see your animals before hand, Also do you know how to find some breeders that are going to the show? I'm going to repticon Raleigh NC and i'm looking at their page but cant find any information on whos going?

it was originally gonna be a sphinx cat (hairless) but that was a scam because they said it was free and they were acting reallyyyy suspicious so now its just a tiny kitty

You click on the individual tables of the map on the repticon page. It doesn’t look like anyone has booked yet. It’s hard to explain so I’ll put a picture down below of what ur looking for 3E7BD571-DDA9-4351-9017-F4251AADF0AD.png
