Hey Nigel,

I'm not trying to knock you on your roach care, but just wanted to give some tips!

I would recommend giving your roaches a better source of consistent water. Are you using fruits/veggies or water crystals? The only reason I'm saying this, is judging from the photos, many of the nymph and adult roaches appear "flat". By that term, I'm referring to their body structure and abdomen. Usually, if well hydrated their thorax regions are plump and stretched. I attached a photo of my nymphs to show you what I mean.

One of the main causes of early death for dubia roaches is dehydration. Also, the better hydrated/plump the female roaches, the more offspring they will produce! Also, when feeding the roaches to your geckos, you want them to be "gut loaded" aka plump with nutrients/water!

Again, I'm only trying to assist you in producing many roaches for many future generations!! Keep up the good work!

Jon

Hi Jon, I use a combination of Water Crystals, Nutro Dog Food, Opuntia Cactus Pads, Trichocereus cactus, aswell as Opuntia fruits. Aswell as a combination of human grade organic Carrots, Apples, Bananas, and the like.

My mother's cat used to trow live roaches in my face at night when I was little so I REALLY hate them... Your pics gave me goose bumps... (or gecko bumps? lol)

I think it's just irony, karma or a mix of both that now is making me go crazy trying to find Dubias for my geckos.... ¬¬.... Based on the reading, they are by far the best in all aspects, they're the cleanest, most prolific and nutritious... and move just enough to provoke their instincts but not so much as to scape so often X3.

Roaches really are the best food for geckos,

They are extrememly easy to breed and in fact thrive on neglect, they are clean, very nutritious, they can live for up to a year and geckos love em.

I have a coloney of roughly 300 or more speckled feeder roaches.

I give them carrots, sweet potato, water, repcal cricket food(pellets) and some egg cartons for them to hide and breed in.

It will get quite messy and eventually will smell so i recommend cleaning once weekly to prevent it getting bad. To get some out to feed your leos just stick you hand in and grab a bunch, they will run for it and some will climb up the walls of the tub i usually grab those as they are easiest to catch.

The ones i am referring to "Nauphoeta cinerea" do not fly:main_thumbsup:

I have a few questions on Dubia roaches if you guys will answer.

So you just keep one tub if you want one colony right? No separating babies from adults and such? Just feed off what you want but make sure there are always enough adults? Also, can anyone post pictures of a female and a male Dubia.(If not, I can always get one off Google).

Will one under tank heat mat provide enough heat?

They give birth to live ones correct? No eggs.

Hey Nigel how big is the tub that you have 'em in? and are those wheels at the bottom?

Thats a 20 gallon tub, and yes it does have wheels. It makes cleaning a blast when I can just roll them off the shelves.

Great Pics and set up Nigel.

Ill try and take some pics of mine later. Things I've also given my roaches are- pepita's (yep they ate them) healthy natural mussily bar with fruit, Fresh veggies and I've even given them some roasted vegetables that were cooked in extra virgin olive oil once they had cooled. I had some left overs and thought why not? they ate it all.

Not sure about using dog food. Its all crude ingredients, real poor quality. it wont hurt but its not the best either.

I recently started breeding crickets too, for some reason i find crickets creepier than roaches lol with roaches i stick my hand in and grab a bunch of them, with crickets i kind of push them in to the container i have my calcium in.

So... what's the best way to "serve" em to your geckos? I'm completely spoiled by my mealie escape-proof dish that I can fill once every three days but I've just purchased a filthy disgusting roach colony (I love my girls, damn them).

Would the roaches bite my geckos if I left em there? Would a cricket-releaser thingy work the same way? ... Should I resign to TOUCH em and plug roach legs for the rest of my geckos lives?

I think it would depend on what type of dog food you use. Personally, I won't let my dogs eat the majority of brands out there (including Nutro), and I wouldn't want my feeder insects that my geckos are eating to be gut loaded with low quality dog food either.

As for feeding roaches to your geckos, just put 2-3 in the tank at a time. If your gecko doesn't get them right away they will get them at some point (they usually always do).

If by the end of the week you find one or more that haven't been eaten i get rid of them. I feed my geckos 6 roaches a day or sometimes i give them 3 roaches and 2 crickets.

No, roaches don't bite and will not crawl over your gecko/s, ive watched them plenty of times and they susualy find the first place to hide and stay there. No need to pull a few roach legs, Geckos prefer a challenge and like a their food to move around. roaches that have a couple of legs pulled dont move much at all that and its an unpleasant thing to do hey.

yeah, dog/cat food really isn't a good choice. Fresh veggies, grains, fruits and specially formulated cricket food pellets such as Repcal are great choices.

Not to sound rude, but just about every Roach breeder in the US, uses Dog food whether its in large or small quantities, lack of Protein (very common in Roaches) can result in cannabalism, aswell as nipped wings, and the list goes on. You are more then welcome to contact me if anyone has questions on how I raise my roaches, and how these 25000 Roaches are doing. :)

Its cool mate, i aint contesting anything. Everyone dose things differently and i was just stating my opinion.

Having been a personal trainer and nutritionist for several years i like to think i know a thing or two about nutrition, human or otherwise.

I wasn't saying the use of pet food for feeders is bad, i wouldn't use it personally but if so many breeders are using it and it dose the job thats all that matters hey, my opinion doesn't change that. You know the saying, nutritionists recommend lol.

- Peace

If a lack of protein is a big concern, I'd certainly use a better quality dog food than Nutro. Especially with the fairly recent buy-out, I don't trust Nutro and its quality. I've noticed a lot of changes and heard some very unsettling things from the company rep that I deal with. Can you get Nature's Variety, Wellness, or any of the Innova dog foods where you live? They're all very good quality brands with much better protein in them. :main_thumbsup:
