Getting her a friend...

Hi

I currently have a sub adult 'normal' leopard gecko in a 20gallon viv and i was thinking about getting her a little friend. I've seen a Hypo Carrot Tail in my local pet shop. Am i right in thinking that there wouldn't be any problem putting them in together!?

and not all geckos get on

i keep a male and female together since i got them last june no problems but im alble to seporate if i need to

Also, something to keep in mind when you purchase a new gecko, is that you want to quarantine it for some time in order to be sure it is as healthy as necessary. This will prevent you, in the worst case scenario, from losing BOTH of your geckos if the new one is not healthy. Also, in case they both do not get along (I have a female that HATES other females) you have another setup for the new female.

If there opposit sex you dont want them together unless they're of proper breeding weight.

If you can meet all the criteria in the posts above, you'll be OK. It's a good idea if you want another gecko. If you're primarily getting one so your gecko won't be "lonely", for the most part geckos are solitary creatures and not social. There are some individual cases where geckos seem to respond to another gecko and be unhappy without a companion. I actually have a normal male who tries much more often to "dig" his way out of his cage when he's alone and is much calmer with a companion (he's in with a female who is not a good breeder and there's a lay box just in case. If he bothers her too much, she can be separated). In this case he doesn't really interact with her. It's as if her presence calms him down.
