Getting uninterested male to breed

I have a proven male, but he isn't mating for me. I've put him with a few girls, and most of the time he will rattle his tail, but not do much after that.

Tonight, one of the girls was rubbing him with her tail, too -- is that their mating ritual type thing? How do I interest the male?

I had to deal with this with one of my males last season. Here are some things to consider:
Are the females ovulating?
Is he "shy" --maybe he's mating at night after you leave them alone?

Things you could try:
--keep them together for awhile and see if anyone becomes gravid
--take the male out and reintroduce him later, especially if you know the females are ovulating (there's a picture of ovulation somewhere on this forum)
--if you can get hold of feces from another male, put that in the cage so he feels he has some competition.

good luck. I finally succeeded by taking the female out and reintroducing her. He was never that enthusiastic with her but she produced 14 babies so I can't complain.

I agree. If the females are not ovulating, then they will not be interested in mating at this time. What you are describing is definitely breeding behavior in your male, so be patient. Most of my females are not ovulating yet, either... but as soon as the daylight hours become markedly longer and there are pheromones floating around the air in the gecko room, there'll be "a whole lotta shakin' goin' on"!

Not to turn this thread a different direction, but is there a way to get an ovulating female to breed? Every time I place her with a male she always fights back when he tries to breed.

Mandi, they may be breeding and you aren't aware of it. Males can be very persistant during breeding season, and females aren't always receptive every time he makes advances.

What if I put them together every night for a half hour or so? Or is it best to just leave them together for a few days, separate & reintroduce?
