How did the giant gene come to be in leos, did someone just come across it in the wild and then continue it??

It's hard to understand how some can be so huge like that.

It was a random mutation 1st hatched out by Ron Tremper.

Click the following link to Ron Tremper's site...

http://www.leopardgecko.com/giant-genetics

...It is his Giant genetics page, and gives a brief history on it... It will answer any of your Giant questions you may have.

...and then check this one out... It's his "Giant FAQ" page... Any other questions you may have will prolly be answered there... If you have one not listed there, then just ask anyone on here, and i'm sure we'll be able to help ya! If someone doesn't have the answer, someone else surely will!!

Thanks a bunch! That answered just about everything for me and that's just crazy that one day a huge gecko popped out of an egg! Lol, I did notice something new on the page though.

I see that Moose died in 07 when he was born in 01? Aren't geckos supposed to live longer than this, was his life shortened because he was so big and do all giants/super giants live a short life compared to the average leo??

That question i do not have the answer to... i have wondered the same thing myself, because i know some leo's can live up to 20 years, lol... I think it may just be because he might have been one of the 1st ones, and was bred alot during his life to try n get alot of giants out of him, so maybe it was the stress factor? Who knows?

Anyone else maybe able to shed some light on this...?

It was likely the super extended captive breeding seasons that caused him to stress out, but honestly 6 years is pretty awesome for a lizard.

Lol, well yea...but if they can live 20+ years I kinda wondered what happened there with Moose since that seemed so short in comparison.

I honestly have a friend with a beardie who is 15-16? years old! He is just ancient and nearly WHITE in color now because he's a living fossil! He does nothing but sleep, he hardly even moves!

personally i have been watching the giants ever since Ron released them and one thing i can say is i also doubt the giant mutation had anything to due with it. His first Giant is still alive and hes older then moose ;)
