Giant or non-Giant? Based on this pic..

Tell me what you all think.. does the gecko on the left look like a Giant to you? This is him compared with his clutchmate.. he also weighed in at 5 grams :main_thumbsup: He looks EXACTLY like his daddy to me, and seems long and lanky ;)

He definately looks bigger than his clutch mate and he has brilliant coloring in him :main_thumbsup:

The only way to know if he is a giant for sure is with time. He will surely seperate himself early compared to other hatchlings the same age but the rule of Tremper is over 100 and 10 inches by 1 year.

Jess MOVE TO NY I NEED ONE OF YOUR LEOS! You just love to tease me by showing off all these newly hatched geckos on here, lol..

While I know NOTHING about giants in that picture he does appear to bigger but then again the one to the right is turned in so it's hard to really tell.

The average length of non-Giant males is usually under 10 inches, so something around 9". I have read that most Giants get above 10 inches, and then the Super Giants get above 11 inches.. I should go measure his daddy to see how long he is..

Thanks Thad :)

LizMarie, LOL you are so sweet :D If I did live anywhere near NY, I'd totally be showing up at your door!! haha :D

Although, Sexyracer, there are geckos that get VERY big too, that are non-Giants.. one characteristic of the Giant in particular is being long and lanky from what I understand. Giants generally get above 100 grams, and Super Giants get above 110 grams.. however, we have a non-Giant that weighs 125 grams, so it's all a little confusing sometimes.

You should see other signs in a couple of weeks Jess. Giant hatchlings have these weird lanky legs. I think they even feel different as they walk on you palm. It's kinda weird to me.

Page 164 of RT's book states that Giant:

Males reach 80-110g by 1 year of age. Super's exceed 110g by 1 year.

Females 60-90g by 1 year of age. Super's exceed 90g by 1 year.

Page 165

"when their young hatched there were a number of them with the characteristic long tails, elongated heads and bodies associated with the Giant trait."

I hope you got a giant :)

Nate, I know EXACTLY what you mean!! I remember when we first received Kratos, the father of these geckos, and his legs were SO LONG.. when he walked on me, it was just so awkward LOL

Thanks for the extra info and everything, I appreciate it :)

in my experience giants usually are a lot bigger compared to a clutch mate at about 5-6 weeks.i found that they were more noticeable around that age up but like others have mentioned i have always gone by the 100g mark by 1 year old myself.what were the parents?Im guessing talbinos?
