Gieco the Gecko

First I want to thank everyone for the wealth of information on this site. It has been very helpful in the last week.

I recently rescued a leo from 2 little girls that were not taking very good care of thier gecko. The gecko had 1 shelter, a tree and somelights and the base covered in sand. The previous owners would dump a bag of crickets and just leave them in the cage until they were eaten and then repeat, no calcium, no humid hide, no heat source other than lights, no cool hide the list goes on.

Needless to say I have had my work cut out for me. So far we have updated her tank to have 3 shelters, a heating pad, and we feed her on a schedule. This week she even shed her skin.

Now I have a couple of questions:

1. The gecko always tilts her head unless she sees a cricket and then she places it level again. Is that normal?

2.Now that we introduced a humid hide she loves it and doesn't ever want to leave, not even to eat. We tried taking it out but she continues to walk around the area as if to say hey where did it go. She we just let her lie in there all the time?

3. She has maybe 4 nails on all of her toes added together. She is missing quite a few tips of her toes. When she shed this week we made sure to get everything off her feet. Will this effect her?

4. Since she shed her skin on Thursday her appetitie has declined. She has eaten maybe one cricket every other day instead of 4. or 1 meal worm instead of 5 or 6. Is this normal?

enigmas exhibit all sorts of physical and mental disorders.is it an enigma.if she uses her hide all the time then let her be.as long as u give her the choice of a warm end.missing toes wont affect her in any way.have u got a fecal done on them?thats what i would do first to rule out parasites ,especially if theyve been neglected

enigmas? I assume you mean the type. She is a standard looking leopard gecko. I will post a pic.

No I have not done a fecal test on her.

She always holds her head that way. We are not sure. And like I said unless she sets her sights on a cricket or meal worm her head stays to the side.

I would say a Hypo. She's very pretty :) I'm not sure about the head though, that seems to be an enigma trait but she doesn't look like an Enigma.

The head tilt is definately not normal and should be addressed by a veterinarian VERY well versed in reptilian medicine.

Really pretty gecko, though.

Let her be in her humid hide as much as she wants. Lots of mine spend the majority of their time in thiers.

The missing toes and toe nails should not be a problem as long as she's walking okay...she really doesn't need to climb on anything, she just needs to be able to get around and if she does that with ease, there shouldn't be a problem at all.

Keep an eye on her appetite, and start recording her weight on a regular basis. This way, you can keep track of if she's actually losing weight or maintaining well.

For sure, We have the luck of a close friend that used to work at the Detroit Zoo and is friends with the reptile folks there. She has their ear and has helped us a bit already by picking their brains.

Another friends wife has done some research on Bearded dragons and per her a symptom of them lacking calcium is a head twist thing similar to what Gieco is dealing with. No saying that its the answer. But it makes sense in that we are almost certain her prior owners never gave her calcium to her diet. We are now dusting the obnoxious crickets and attempting to dust the meal worms.

It isn't uncommon for them to have a decreased appetite after shedding. Their skin is full of nutrients and increases satiety. Hopefully the head tilt is not permanent damage to a nerve due to hypocalcemia, but if otherwise healthy, she will just be a crooked gecko. :main_cool3:

Thanks for all the advice. She seems to have her normal appetite back. She ate 5 crickets tonight.:)

We are keeping a close eye on the head tilt thing. We will see our vet friends this weekend.
