Your viv looks really nice but you need to get rid of the same asap!!!!!! Sand causes impaction which in turn will kill your gecko. Even if the sand says it is easily digestable it is not! You can change to repti-carpet, newspaper, tiles, or paper towels.

The set-up is great, except for the sand. You may want to read about impaction problems ( you will find lots of info. on this site), paper towels or repti-carpet or tile works best and is safe to use. I also hope you have a UTH under there somewhere, they need the belly heat to digest thier meals. Good luck!

i have read a lot on the site about impaction and i have spoken to the shop i purchased gizmo from and they are of the opinion that allthe talk about impaction etc is overated. i am not so sure and i will change the base to quarry tiles asap. thankyou for your comments dave

yes the viv has a uth and a heat lamp,red lamp etc.
i put a lot of reaserch into this before i went out and purchased gizmo and his viv but it looks like i took the wrong advise on the calcium sand. dave

I'm wondering what the store you purchased him from is called? Does it end in co or smart??

HAHA....I agree if it happens to end in those words then yes they will tell you anything to get you to spend money there. Don't listen to what those high schoolers have to say. Research and go from there.

Take it from us, it's not worth the risk. Sand is bad! The person at the pet store just wanted to sell you a bag of it..

Think of it this way, leopard geckos in the wild are not on loose sand, but rather compact ground more akin to tile. If you really want to go naturalistic, that would be more close to what they have in nature.

Excuse me but the reason I was asking was to try to explain to her that the people there are sometimes told what to say. I happen to work for the one that ends in smart and I can tell you that we are told that sand is fine, however everyone in my store knows better and will tell the customers so. Before you judge "those high schoolers" do some research. I am not trying to sound mean or rude but I was going to tell her that if it does end in smart and she wants to believe them then she can listen to me. Myself and everyone else in my store do what is right for the animals against company policy but some employees dont have the guts cause you can get in a lot of trouble. I am not defending my chain but some of the people who work there that are actually good.

I also wanted to add that I dont want to turn this into a debate on this fourm so if you would like to talk on this issue, pm me.

I'm sorry, I didn't mean to call every employee high schoolers...what I meant is that some of the people there don't have the knowledge on every single animal that they sell and some probably don't care and it's just a job. I didn't mean it in that way. My bad. Some people really do care like yourself obviously and thats the people they need in the pet stores.

I'm sorry I took it the wrong way! Sometimes I just get tired of people judging everyone who works at my chain as a whole instead of taking each store as its own individual case.

I'm very sorry again. They definitely need more people like you in the stores because obviously you care a lot about the animals and you know information about them. The ******** I went into a while back was very bad. The tanks were dirty and smelled terrible. I felt so bad for the little fellas. Sorry again :(

You can stop apologizing its okay. I have been to a lot of other pets_marts and I can tell you that most times they are like yours and that makes me sad. I dont understand sometimes how we can keep our store nice, clean and the animals healthy and others can not. We all follow the same daily schedule but idk maybe we just got lucky with our staff!
