Hey, I'm new here as (I'm hoping) you all can see. Anyways, I won't waste much time with an introduction. I am 18 years old; live in Ontario, Canada; own one 5 year old, male, normal leopard gecko named Tino; and am interested in building a custom cage for him. As of now he is in a 36"x12.5"x16" old aquarium. He has the essential hot-warm-cool gradient, as well as a hide on the hot side and the cool side. He also has his humid hide (which needs improvements), his food, water, etc... His substrate is tile, which I have no plans on changing as it looks both great and works equally well.

The problem with his cage right now is that I am going away to university next year, and will be living in residence and he will obviously not be able to come with me. My mom and brothers also do not like the whole idea of getting close to superworms, and my mom plain out is afraid of the cute little guy. The tank is also aesthetically horrible, and there is no storage space what-so-ever.

My idea is to build a sort of tank that could also function as an end table. This idea is obviously not new (see here), but I do not feel like paying in upwards of $1,000 to be given a table that probably does not have what I need/want. The picture below gives an extremely basic idea of what I'm planning, and hope to construct.

Overall, I expect the table to be (at max) around 40" high (and obviously will be a different kind of end table :main_rolleyes:). The dimensions of the actual cage will be 30"x24"x20". This will give him 720 square inches of floor space (opposed to the 576 square inches he has now). I am hoping to be able to put in sliding glass doors, or another similar method of gaining access. There will also be a few inches of room at the top of the cage for the lights, etc... (not shown in picture).

After the wall of text, I have a simple question or two. What do I *need* to make sure gets into the design (ventilation, glass floor for UTH, etc...), and my second question is me wondering whether any of you have any advice, tips, or experience with this sort of thing. Thanks in advance, Nefarial. :)

Before anything, are you going to a university that lets you keep small pets? Because most don't, so I would suggest giving the table a door that can close and hide the tank for room inspections. That's if you want to give it a fancier look, you can always just cover it up with a towel or something creative, but it's just something for you to think about adding if you wanted to. Last thing you want it to be forced to give him away by your university!

If you're building the tank right into the table, instead of building a tank to go into the table, I would definately provide a way to ventilate (either through air holes or something like that). Definately make room for UTH, but I think that's all as far as stuff you need to incorporate You can add space for a light at the top, but that's more for your viewing him than because he needs light. Oh and make sure that you can room to add a top of some sort to the tank in case there's a risk he can climb out (using hides or whatever).

But I think you basically know what you're going to have to include :) Good luck with it!

First of all, thanks for the response. Secondly, sorry, I should have been more clear in regards to university. He will be staying home, while I live elsewhere. I need the new tank so I can ease the trouble the rest of my family may have. For ventilation I was thinking to leave a small space near the top of the table and the tank and to cover it with some mesh or chicken fence. I will probably also use a glass floor to ease the trouble with the UTH that wood would prove. I will also probably use a 'day' and 'night' light for (obviously) my (families) viewing, as he should get all the heat he needs via UTH. Again, thanks for the response. :)

Well if they are afraid of him, how are they going to clean his cage? I would give it to a friend or something to take care of him imo.

I'll be living close enough to home that I'll be able to come home every once in a while. Cleaning the cage won't be the problem, getting the food IN my gecko may be the challenge. :p He may be staying with my dad though, if my mom decides against it. Anyways, I'm going to build a cage regardless.

:main_laugh: Someone forgot to tell my Leos not to climb.

I agree with this! Mine used to walk in circles until I did my first foam project, but then she started climbing in circles! So now I have the 70gal and she's still discovering everything in there!
