It could. Depends on the size of the tank and all. Usually if you go somewhere like ***** (Chain pet store), they will have a chart that shows which fish can live together. If I remember correctly, betta fish and goldfish do not mix well.

Bettas and goldies are not a great mix. For one, bettas prefer warmer waters than goldfish.

Goldfish may also be too active for the usually slow-swimming betta. I don't see why you would want to keep these species together truthfully. They do not naturally exist in the same environments and the goldfish will very quickly dwarf any betta in size.

Goldfish should not be kept with tropical fish. They have different requirements. Food, temp and even space.
Poor betta would bounce all over. Cause two fancy goldfish need 20 gallon and 200 gph. That is a pretty strong current for a small betta.

I would have gone straight with the fins, bettas like to think they own the tank, the "big dog" so goldfish fins would be nipped by bettas in no time.

hello,

beside the different need of temps, space n food.
The most important is what Srt142191 says !
Fancy Goldfish and small fish is not a good combo, I allready saw Guppy-females in Stores chasing 8inch Goldfish to death!!! Because it nipped on Goldfish.

Ofcourse there are for sure many people keeping Goldfish and Guppy in a big tank or pond, but I would not try it with a betta if u like your Goldys.

I had a betta in a tank with many other fish and I never had any problems. They are aggressive to their own kind, not the other species of fish. And please people dont jump on me, because Im only speaking from my own expirence.

Not at all I wouldn't jump on you for it, by all means yes they are very aggressive to other male bettas because of the big fins, which is why its best to keep along the lines of tetras and clownfish etc, that don't have big fins, its the fins that set the male bettas off, but in all means I've had betta tank set up for a while with plecs, clownfish, frogs, tetras, cobys, etc..Its the big fancy fins you have to stay away from, like the silver sharks.

I must have had a weirdo then, I had him with an angel fish and grommie and never had any problems.

Could have been that or just your tank was big enough they hadenough space they wouldn't get overly aggressive all the time.

My brother kept a Betta and a Gold Fish together and the betta killed the gold fish.

Betas can live with other fish- but goldfish is not a good idea due to different heat and filtration requirements. Maybe pH also? I would have to look that up and/or ask my fish-crazy roommate.

There are multiple reasons not to house a goldfish with other species...
1. Goldfish are messy fish that fowl the water making it difficult for other inhabitants to live. Goldfish give off a lot more ammonia than other fish do... creating an environment where less oxygen is available so unless you do extra water changes/have a large tank then other fish may have a hard time surviving.
2. Most fish in the pet trade are tropical, meaning they need heated water. Goldfish have a hard time tolerating heated water. Combined with the reason above, reduced oxygen due to ammonia combined with reduced oxygen due to warmer temperatures makes it even more difficult for fish to survive.
3. Goldfish are vegetarians while many tropical fish are not. Yes goldfish will eat meat and just about anything you put in front of their face put their digestive systems were not designed to digest meat. So a diet with a lot of meat in it can lead to swim bladder problems(makes them float around all funny and they cant right themselves)

Why bettas should not be with goldfish
1. Bettas can tolerate oxygen problems better than other fish due to a special breathing aparatus. They are part of a family of fish know as labyrinth fish. They breathe air from the surface and force it down through a specialized breathing system. But they would still be stressed by a high ammonia environment.
2. Bettas prefer heated temperatures but can survive at room temperature.
3. Bettas USUALLY attack other fish with big showy fins. They think it is another male Betta and become territorial, fighting to the death.
4. Bettas are carnivores. They do not eat the roots of plants like some people believe and the person that started this rumor should be hurt

The aggressive nature of a species of fish can not always be predicted for every single one of that species. Sometimes there are oddballs that do not act the same as others and you can get away with housing unlikely matches together.

pH is not an issue between these fish. Both species are hardy and very adaptable to almost any freshwater pH, excluding the extremes 6 or 8.

Thank you Michelle :)
I am a avid betta owner, and a lot of people don't understand they are not "bowl pets"

Goldfish should be kept by themselves no matter what; if anything do it just for the amount of ammonia produced by a single goldfish.

But also, bettas need a 5 gallon tank to themselves, with good but slow filtration (they do not do well with strong currants)
It is true they can "Breathe" from the water tops, but rice paddies still have flowing currents, an bettas are sensative to water changes, and stagnant, dirty water is no good. Neither is changing all new water every week. Good combinations with a betta in a 5 gallon would be a apple snail or perhaps a ghost shrimp. :)
