Grain Mites

We just got into breeding mealworms about two or three months ago. We've got a good colony with babies, eggs, beetles, etc. However, we're finally going to switch bedding from store bought bran to chicken mash from a feed store.
It's a lot cheaper and people here say, better for the mealies. However, we're afraid of introducing grain mites into the colony. What's the best way to avoid this? Are they in chicken mash or just in grain and bran? Some say to microwave it.. How and how long should we do that if we should at all?

Thanks!

I think i had grain mites or weevils, so what i did was microwaved for a few mins then baked at 200 for 20 mins. If that doesn't kill whatever is in it then I don't know what will!

This may sound like an odd question, but is microwaving it for five minutes safe? I remember in college I forgot to put water in my ramen noodles they started to burn and smoke. Just wanting to make sure you guys use this method.
